This new arrangement will represent an annual saving of £(>,500 in the lighting expenditure, ns compared with the returns for 1870.—Mr Macassoy lias tiled a criminal information against the 1 Vttkalip Mail for saying that MiMiller retires from the election contest for a consideration. —The No. 2 Scottish Company has beaten the Groyinoiith Company in a return match, by ten points.— February lb : No new wheat is offering ns yet, nor arc there any important transactions in breadstuff*. New oats are 2s ; malting barley is scarce at 4s. The supply of old Hour is almost exhausted ; the price remains at .£l3. —February 17 : The City Council has received offers amounting to £30,000, and for £4,0(>0 i with bonds. £IO,OOO was tendered for above par, and the whole has been allotted at 103.
Timaru. —February 1:7 : The subscriptions for tlie relief of (lie Greymouth sufferers now nniount to £lO5 19s. A meeting was held last night to consider the steps to bo taken for relieving the sufferers by tlie Greymouth flood. About twenty-live persons were present., and subscription lists were opened, £4G being subscribed in the room : £SO was forwarded by telegram this morning, ami the people are subscribing liberally. Christchurch. February 17 : The grain market shows a tendency to improve. Wheat, 4s; oats, Is ‘.id to 2s; barley for malting scarce, and 4s obtained for medium samples. Blitter and cheese unaltered in price, but scarce. Blenheim. —February 14 : At tlie Wairua nomination the show of hands resulted as follows :—Seymour, 37 ; M aid, 14. A poll was demanded. Port Chalmers.— February 14 : Arrived—Noon, Nevada, from Lyttelton. Whangaxut. —Fobruarp 17 : Met Jay lias been committed on a charge of murder, the Bench remarking that probably lie will be indicted for manslaughter before the Supreme Court. The general opinion on the evidence is that it discloses justifiable homicide. Bail lias been allowed tlie accused in two sureties of £250 each, and himself in £SOO.
