THE DOINGS AT WHANGAMATA.

To tin; Editor of tiie Thanks Guardian. Sift, — 'u your issue of the l'Jtli instant, you published a letter from your own correspondent at Hikutaia. On my arrival here, this morning, my attention was called to the letter in question, and which makes particular reference to myself in connection with what is being done at Whnngamata. I will only refer to the second paragraph, which says, that I, with the assistance of the Ngatirakaua have built a very neat llauhmt Church. This statement is absolutely untrue ; but, l have, with the assistance of TeTapuika, a section of the loyal A raw a tribe, built a “ very neat" Mooting House for the convenience of those who wish to avail themselves of it when any meeting takes place in reference to that particular district. That Te Kooti is shortly expected at 'Whangamata is equally false. And the other paragraph, which says I am not only the builder but the High Priest is the same as the other portions I have referred to—untrue. Your correspondent says, “ this is really a fact about the Church and Davis,” leaving your readers to imagain, I presume, that the other portions of of his communication could not be relied upon. Finalhq he suggests that I must look out,” or I shall get into a scrap.” I will, through your columns, inform your correspondent that I am quite capable of taking care of myself, and when his “ assistance” is required perhaps his sense of duty will cause him to render it with his

! usual alacrity. I trust your peripetitic ' correspondent will on his next, visit to j Whangamata obtain some reliable ini formation for publication in your columns | and not communicate to you as ho has on this occasion done —a tissue of falsehoods. —I am, &c., J. E. Davis, High Priest (?) Grahamstown, February 16, 1872.
