Forbes. —February 5 : Prisoner James Devlin died in gaol on Saturday afternoon ; an inquest has been held, and a verdict returned that deceased died from typhus fever, engendered by insufficient accommodation for the number of prisoners usually confined in the gaol, from over-crowding and bad ventilation of cells, and from excessive heat of the exercising yard. The jury added a rider recommending that immediate steps be taken by Government to remedy the above defects.
Young. —February 7 : At a public meeting held on Monday, Dr Charles Temple, J.P., presented Mr T. G. Weir, late public school teacher, with an address and purse of sovereigns, on the eve of his leaving for Hill End. The Masonic body also presented him with a testimonial.
Tenterfield. February 7 : At the Quarter Sessions held yesterday, before Mr District Judge Mcymott—John Malony, for assaulting a police officer in the execution of his duty, was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment, with hard labour. Hat. —February 5 : Constable Eyre, perhaps the most active policeman in the Riverina district, believes that at last, after severe work, he has found the murderer of Catherine M‘Nab, who was killed at the Willandra Hotel, last August.— Thomas Jones, alia* Norris, who was takeri at Oxley, on Saturday last, will be brought up to-morrow (Tuesday), at the Hay Police Court, on a charge of murder. The squatters have promised to give i their support. Brisbane. —February 3 : The Royal Cornu fission on railways held a sitting today. The members present were Messrs J. Scc4t (chairman), Wionholt, B. Ci’ibb, Lilley , Atken, and Bcrnays (secretary). The s ecretary was instructed to write to the Ai istralian colonies, New Zealand, and also i ;o the British Consul at San Francisco, for reports respecting railway construed on. An alligator’s nest has been discow ered on Eighteen Mile Island, Fitzroy River, containing sixty-seven eggs. Thirty -seven tons of stone from the Overland '■ Telegraph Beef, Ethridge River, yielded iOSI-oz. of gold, a much better yield than was expected. Four more reefs were laid off yesterday ; the total :number now working, sixty - nine. February 5 : 308 tons of stone from No. 1 North Srnithficld, Gympie, have yielded ■2,0300 z. gold. A teamster, named Darcy, arrived at Norruanton to-day, on foot, from Carron Crock. During the late heavy rains he had been detained by flood* with three other draymen and mailman, thirty miles from Carron Creek. Several horses and bullocks were drowned, and many others lost, amongst the laltcr the horse of the mailman. Cardwell. —February 7 : 11.M.5. Basilisk, bound to Cape York with Government stores, arrived to-day with a schooner in tow, which is said to have been engaged kidnapping. Captain Moresby reports boarding her oil this port. She is waterlogged, and completely gutted. No clue to name or owner can be discovered. On board were found fourteen South Sea Islanders, in various stages of starvation, and also three dead bodies. The white crew had either been murdered, or had abandoned the vessel. There was neither food nor water on board. The Basilisk wishes to he reported all well.. Mkluouune. —February 3 : The dividends of the Sandhurst mines exceeded the calls last year by £152,546. February 5 : The National Bank meeting was largely attended, and rather noisy. Mr P. Langwill took the chair. The directors laid a document on the table stating; that an arrangement had been arrived at which would obviate the necessity of a public discussion of the bank affairs, which was inadvisable. It stated that an irreconcilcablc difference of opinion had existed bctwcon Mr Young and the directors, and that it was not to the interest of the bank that lie should retain office. Ho had placed his resignation in the hands of the directors, which would meet the exigencies of the case, and they would be prepared to rescind the resolution for his dismissal. Hewitt is to run Bedford five miles on the Melbourne ground, on March 16, and gives him 300 yards start. The entries for the Geelong races are good. A miner was killed at the Golden Gully claim, Sandhurst, last night. Inglish’s case came before the Presbyterian Assembly, ami was referred to a commission, which is to sit in May. -A writ of action for libel lias been issued at the instance of Mr G. P. Smith against the Daily Telegraph for an article which appeared this morning. Damages are laid at £2,000. Augustus Keith, the well-known blind speculator, is now an inmate of the Benevolent Asylum. He projected the Riverina Pastoral Association and other schemes. An attempt lias been discovered to defraud shippers of wheat by placing in the bulk quantities only fit "for fowls’ food. samples of wheat, and the tendency of the market is upward. There is more inquiry for flour. Gouldburn. —February 9 : Air Alexander will stand for Goulburn, and Air De Salis, jun., for Queanbeyan. * “Wollongong. —February 9 : Air John Brown, of Dapto, is a candidate for the representation of Illawarra. A requisition is being got up asking Air YV. Forster to contest the election. Air A. Lysaught is also spoken of as likely to be a candidate.
Albury. —February 9: The town is in a state of great excitement. Country people are flocking in. An open air meeting has been held to-day in relation to the Border Customs’ duties. Police have been summoned from the surrounding stations. There was a meeting of magistrates this morning. All the principal business men have been sworn in special constables. Five hundred persons attended the meeting to consider the political situation. Mr George Day, J.P., occupied the chair. Resolutions condemning Sir James Martin and the Governor, and affirming the desirableness of petitioning the Imperial Parliament in relation to the present state of things were carried. Sir James Martin was hanged and burnt in effigy amidst groans and hisses, and cheers for the Queen and the Argus. It was rumoured that goods were intended to be brought over, and payment of duty resisted. Five or six hundred people assembled on the banks of the river, but nothing was done to cause any collision. In addition to the strong resolutions passed condemning the conduct of Sir James Martin and the Governor, and authorising an appeal to the Queen, for the redress of grievances, a local committee was formed to agitato in other parts of Riverina. There is a strong feeling in favour of annexation to Y ictoria, in the event of no redress being obtained. A vote of thanks was passed to Air Forster, Air Jcnuings, and other Opposition members. A great meeting was held at Borowa, on Thursday, and resolutions much to the same effect were agreed to. " Melbourne. —February 9 : Tne Alclbourne Exchange Company has declared a dividend of 30s per share. A man, whose name is unknown, was drowned in Yarra last night whilst fishing. Austin, the defaulting secretary to the Alfred Hospital, has been committed for trial. Large sales of sugars were made privately ; 4,000 bags of Mauritius at £34 10s for yellows to £4l 10s for whites. At auction, damaged Hongkong sugars brought £37 5s to £3B 5s for lino counters, and £3O 5s to £3O 10s for browns. Private sales of tobacco—halfpounds, at Is 4d ; tens, 2s 21-d to Is 2;,*d. Two shipments of Raven twist brought full prices. “Two Seas” and “Venus” tens sold at Is 2kl. The Riverine Aleat Preserving Company show a profit of £1,500 for the past half-year, and they intend to enlarge operations. The Argus gives full statistics of trade with Riverina to show that the interests of Riverina are identical with those of Victoria, and adds that she must sec by this time as she has never seen before that all the sympathies of \ ietoria are with her, and that if she desires a closer political and commercial connection with us she lias only to express her desire. Air Anthony Trollope proceeds to Western Australia by the next mail. The Government promise the vine-growers that they will make an important modification in distillation law. A branch of the filternational Society is in course of formation here. The personality of the late Air Frederick Taylor, sqiiattc-ix of Riverina, is sworn under £19,000. Alaizc is 1(1 lower. Friday, 8.54 p.m. : A well-known mining speculator at Sandhurst has been arrested on a charge of rape. A public meeting at Albury, on the Border question, resulted in riotous proceedings. West Maitland. —February 9: The Eskford banquet was a great success ; about 60 gentlemen were present, and the speeches in favour of the Government were enthusiastically received. .
