MINING.

Alburnia. —The crushing of 115 tons at the Herald Battery was finished yesterday, and gave a return of 81oz lGdwt 12gr. This is the last crushing that will take place at this batteVy. The company’s own machine will for the future crush everything that comes out of the mine. The crushing going on now at the battery is looking up for a good average return of about an ounce to the ton, but yesterday morning, owing to the scarcity of the water supply, 10 head had to be bung up for a time. However, now that we may expect to have more rain, there if every probability of the machine being able to work all the winter. Work in the mine is at present being carried on from the old Success tunnel, leaving all the ground below this level untouched for the present. The manager thinks that from several blocks unworked at this level, and from several leaders known but not worked on, that he will be able to obtain a quite sufficient supply of payable stone to keep the battery going until he gets the shaft down. The sinking of this was commenced yesterday, and it has to be carried down GO feet. ” At this depth it will be 30 feet below any ground yet worked in the mine, and will be on a level with the main adit now going in from behind the battery, thus giving an immense section of the reef to be worked on.

Waitemata. —The crushing for this company, which was completed on Tuesday, was cleaned up and retorted yesterday, and gave a result of 530 z. 3dwt. of gold from something under 100 tons of stone, this being at the rate of a little over halt an ounce to the ton. Prince Imperial.—A crushing of 24 tons of stone from the Prince Imperial was cleaned up yesterday, and the amalgam retorted 20oz. 17dwt. of gold. This, though not quite equal to the last crushing from the same lode, which gave just an ounce to the ton, is still a good yield. WIIAU. Yesterday morning the manager started the battery in order to crush all the stone now out on the mine. Five head were nut on stuff taken from (he Black Angel main adit level, and he purposes keeping 10 head going on dirt from the main workings ; but we doubt much whether he will be able to keep them all going with the present supply of water. Nothing is at present known as to the tributers in the mine. Ruby.— Their main adit level is now in about 370 feet, 40 feet of the last contract having been completed. They have cut through a small lode some four inches wide, which looks well, and carries a great quantity of metal with it, but no gold had been seen up to yesterday afternoon. The lode runs diagonally across the drive, so that they will carry it in for some feet more with them. The country has much improved for the last few feet of driving, and is now good working country. This may probably be a branch from some main lode close by, or as driven on it may make larger, and turn out to be something of value. The air in the tunnel seems excellent now, though some time back it was rather bad.

Bendigo Independent. —The crushing for this claim will be finished prolmbly about Monday next. Five bead at Weston’s are only at work on the stuff now, and besides the large parcel from the small reef, they arc going to try some from the large El Dorado reef, which runs through the ground. The stone does not look to be of much value, but appearances arc deceitful. However, we shall be surprised if it contains much of tho precious metal. Multum -in - Parvo. The Mullum started yesterday morning to crush with 10 head, which had been employed on Bendigo stuff for tho previous week or so. The stone is making a good show, and will turn out very well. There arc in all some GO or 70 tons to be put through, besides a parcel of specimens. Criterion Battery. Besides the Golden Age. and Beehive crushings, which arc being continued at this machine, the two-stamper battery lias been started on a lot from the Wade claim, which is making a good show on the plates.
