MINING.
i About this time mining news of any im- ' portanco is very scarce indeed. Most of ; the mines arc working away steadily, ' without any changes of importance tak- | ing place. In the Caledonian there is no | alteration in the appearance of the mine I except that in the drive to the north on ; the reef at the low level, the lode is not I looking at all well. The water is still [ quite under command, andsinkingisgoing on. The United Pumping Association art getting on rapidly now with their foundation works, and also with their operations belowground. In a short time they will : commence to fix the boilers and engine, which will be in readiness by the time the reef is cut, as when this takes place the I inflow of wafer may he expected to he I heavy, flood accounts and encouraging ! are still to hand from the All Nations : ground, and Ihe crushing is looking very I well. Another excellent fortnight’s yield may he confidently looked for. The Inverness arc breaking down large quantities of stone, and are crushing with. 10 head, the show being very fair. The Sons of Freedom have completed a crushing of 48 tons of stone, which yielded sixty-nine oz. three dwt. of gold. This, though not up to what was expected, is nearly 1-Aoz. to the ton. and so is very fair. A larger return is looked for from the stone now coming out. The Waiotahi Tribute have lodged 1 loz.7dwt.of melted gold,as tlieresultof 11 tousof storm from! lie lode worked on near to the Manukau boundary. The Flying Cloud are crushing with 10 head at the Manukau llattery, and with a good show. The reef looks well in the slopes, and gold is frequently seen. At Tararu there is a good deal of work being done in Fiery Creek. The Yankee Doodle, Missouri, and Californian being in full | swing. The directors of the latter claim I met yesterday, and have declared a dividend of 2s (id per scrip share, making a | total of 8s per share since the low level j has been opened up. Numbers id’ the ! companies on the field are now being let j on tribute, and this we certainly think is | the best thing that can he done just now, ! as the legal managers experience snob I difficulty in getting in the calls that, in | very many instances, the mines cannot be i worked at all. In the Nonpareil, (be ! foundations for flic machinery are being | laid, and no time will he lost in getting everything fixed on tlie ground. In (ho meantime the whip is acting well, and work is being pushed ahead down below, with very good prospects. The Central Italy, next door, have their machinery nearly finished, and a start will be made on Monday next to got the shaft cleaned out and continue sinking.
