MINERS’ ACCIDENT FUND.
To tlm Editor of tlic Thames Gvahimax. Slit, —I observe in your issue of this morning, at the end of the account of the accident to the man Jewett in the Caledonian mine on Monday last, a very good suggestion, namely, the establishment of a “ Mine)s’ Accident Fund.” Now, sir, I think that if this matter was brought fairly before the working miners of this Held, they would see the absolute necessity for the formation of such a fund, to aid them in the hour of need. If all the miners on the Held were to subscribe the sum of sixpence per week whilst in employment, a fund would soon he raised that would not only he sufficient for the requirements of those injured whilst following their occupation, hut also, in ordinary sickness. Most of the trades in the old country and in America have these sick funds, and if my memory serves me correctly, in many of the factories and warehouses in England it is the rule for the hands to set aside some small amount of their wages for the benefit of their fellow-workmen in case of accident or sickness. Certainly many of my fellowminers belong to Friendly-Societies, such as the Foresters, Odd-Fellows, and others ; but there arc also a great many who do not. 1 would wish to impress upon the miners of the field doing something in the matter, for I think it only requires to he commenced to be successful. —I am, &c., A Mineii. Shellback, Feb. Id, 1872.
