PROPOSED AUSTRALIAN SUBSIDY TO AVEBB’S LINE.
Sydney, Jan. 20. The Chamber of Commerce, Sydney, have passed resolutions in favour of a subsidy of £15,000 being granted to Webb’s line of steamships. New Zealand five per cents due 1872, have been sold to the extent of £66,000. LATEST AUSTRALIAN TELE G R A M S. Muswellduook, Jan. 18. Six cases of sunstroke occurred in this district on Tuesday and Wednesday, and five of them have proved fatal. Biuimvoon, Jan. 18. Mr Walker, storekeeper at Mongarlowc, died suddenly to-day. The case of the Queen v. Newberry, for sly grog selling, has been dismissed. AVaggon, horses, and goods had been seized by the Nithsdale police. Aloruya, Jan. 18. Mr Henry Clarke, member for Eden, arrived here yesterday, and had an enthusiastic reception. He addressed his constituents at 3 o’clock. Air Flannagan, J.P., occupied thechair. AVhen Mr Clarke had finished his speech, a vote of confidence in him was carried unanimously. He was afterwards entertained at a public dinner, at which 100 persons were present. Mudgee, Jan. 18. The Gulgong telegraph line will be opened to-morrow for public business. Melbourne, Jan. 18. Air Greenlaw, acting manager, has been appointed manager of the Colonial Bank. —Great excitement was caused this morning by an anouncement that the Prince of Wales had died. The error arose from mistaking a signal from the steamer. —George Aloss has been arrested, charged with having taken part in a fatal affray in the street, and struck one Alorrison, who has since died. —The wreck of the Loch Lcven, at King’s Island, fetched £llO. The mail news is engrossing attention. Adelaide, Jan. 18. The English news is not likely to affect the com market. AVheat is firm at ss. A fire broke out at the mills of John Dunne and Co., Mount Barker, last night, but it was promptly checked. AViseman’s Ferry, Jan. 19. A man, whose name is unknown, was yesterday found dead at Alaroota, on the Windsor Road, by T. Bewcock, a drover. An inquest has been held, and a verdict recorded that death was caused by exposure to the sun. Brisbane, Jan. 19. The business of the session has been concluded this afternoon, and Parliament will probably be prorogued to-morrsw, until the first week in April. Air Scott's motion for a committee on the northern railway was struck off the paper, and on the motion of Air Liliey a resolution was agreed to that a Royal Commission be appointed to sit during tho recess, and to inquire into the subject of railway extension and construction generail}'. The Commission to be appointed from among the members of the Assembly. The Normantown telegram of to-day states that the rain continues, that the rivers and creeks are still flooded, and that mail communication is interrupted. From Bowen it is stated that the Omeo sent a boat ashore at midnight on the 17th, and that Mr Todd reports all well. Twelve [ dravs are reported on the road from ! Ravenswood to Normanby. The weather is magnificent. Air Davidson, a clerk in the Commercial Bank, was drowned in Brisbane River on AVednesday night. His body has been recovered to-day. Alelbourne. Jan. 19. Captain Collard was charged at the Police Court, to-day, under the Merchant Shipping Act, with negligence in losing the
Sussex. Captain Payno was examined, and the case stands adjourned until tomorrow. .The Commissioner for Railways intends to enforce penalties under the contract, if the first section of the north-eastern line be not completed within the contract time, that is, not later than March 31.— I The mail steamer Bangalore sailed at 3 this afternoon for Sydney. The Dandenong has also sailed. —Everything is very dull, but the weather is fine—The mail news ..is considered favourable. — Brandies will he firmer. —A cargo of red Baltic deals and battens has been sold privately at an advance on recent rates. — Tobaccos have been sold by auction at the following rates : —Bright twist, Is 24d ; nary, tens, from 9{d to 9jj ; bright fours, Is to Is OJd ; pocket pieces, from Is Id to Is 2d; dark half-pounds, Is 14d. Three thousand bags Mauritius sugars ex Lorton Vale have been sold by auction ; —white crystals at £4O ; yellow counters, £36; low ditto, £34—showing a firm market. There was no other business. A man named John Fraser was found lying poisoned in Little Bourke-street, last night; and there has been a sudden death at the Spencer-street Railway Station. The body of another man who belonged to the Sussex boat lias been washed ashore. Queexsclikf, Jan. 19. Sailed. —Adeline Burke, barque, for Newcastle ; at 5.40 p.m., Bangalore, mail steamer, for Sydney. Adelaide, Jan. 19. Parliament met to-day. Air Kingston has been elected Speaker. Shortly after his election, the Governor arrived, and delivered the opening speech. It states that the reinforcements forwarded to the Northern Territory arc so ample that the speedy completion of the work in connection with the telegraph is a matter of certainty. It also refers to the details of the arrangements which have been made with the British Telegraph Company on account of the delay his Excellency alluded to the recent discoveries of gold both in the north and in (he south. The Estimates arc to be brought forward at once. The revenue is said to be sufficient to meet the ordinary expenditure, and for gradually reducing the deficit caused by the overexpenditure of previous years. It is proposed to bring about a consolidation of the public debt at a reduced rate of interest, and to raise a further loan of £310,000 for the construction of the South-Eastern Railway, the completion of the overland telegraph, and the further drainage of the sou. h-eastern district. Among the promised measures are an Education Bill, a Land Bill, an Insolvency Bill, a Road Bill, and a Bill to amend the Electoral law. A telegram received from Port Darwin by the Government, and dated 26th December, states that all are well—that tbe season is wet; that the line has progressed, but that the work is now interrupted. Air Alilner had arrived at the Roper.—Sales of wheat have taken place at ss.
