REPORTED DISCOVERY OF GOLD AT WHANGAREI.

Mu. Rl'sT and party have been engaged prospecting for sonic time on the quartz ridges at the back of the township oJ: Whangarci. Our correspondent says : “ Mundic has been found, and there is a determination on the part ol’ the leading merchants to have the quartz hills thoroughly prospected, and the quartz tested at the Thames. 11 was reported on Saturday that the Maoris have found goldbearing quartz at Alamigakaramea, and that some specimens were sent to .Auckland by Captain Anderson, of the Clyde, last trip. As the workmen were engaged metalling the road from Air Johnston s to Meldrum’s Hill, they cut through a bed of chalk and clay, some of which has been tried, and it forms an excellent substitute for whiting. One peculiarity about it is That, when a lump is dropped into water, it causes a slight effervescence, inis may explain, or help to explain, the cause of the famous Whangarci ‘Soda Springs’ that are in the immediate vicinity, though at a much lower level.” As Mr Chceseman was digging for a well on Norman’s property, V haiig'uroi, at present leased by Dr Sissons, lie came upon plumbago, or black-lead, at a depth of sonic 40 feet. The black-lead commonly used in Auckland is imported front England, nr brought from the province of Nelson, where it is found in large quantities, and prepared for sale in the shops.— Crons.
