KAUWAERANGA HIGHWAY BOARD

Tm-'. usual meeting of the Hoard was held last night at the office. Present: Messrs burgess (chairman), Mill, Scott, Lipsey, 1 lie Secretary, and the Engineer to the Hoard. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. The Cn.Utt.MAN stated that he had waited oil the Superintendent on Saturday, and lie (thcSuperintendent) had promised that £SOO should be paid to the Hoard immediately, and the balance would depend greatly on how the revenue came in. In accordance with this opinion, the Engineer was instructed to see to the carrying out of the work. Mr Mini, moved “That some one be appointed to collect the rates immediately, and that stringent measures be taken to make the ratepayers come forward and pay.” Seconded by Mr Scott, and carried. The Chairman said that during Hie next fortnight £2OO would be required lo meet the liabilities of the Hoard, and this must be done out of tlie rates. Under the new Act, collecting the. rates was greatly facilitated, and the costs much lessened. A letter was read from the, UnderColonial Secretary stating that the General Government subsidy would be paid to the Hoard through the Provincial Treasurer on completion of the necessary works. The money to be used exclusively for making new roads, culverts, bridges, &e., and maintaining such roads for one year, or for the completion of works commenced last year, but not yet finished. The following financial statement was presented by the Secretary Dr. to overdraft and accounts paid, £-I9G. _ Cr. by monies received from the Provincial Government and rates collected, £2lll Gs lid ; balance due, £24(5 17s Id. The Secretary was instructed to write to tiie Superintendent for the £SOO promised to the Board. Mr Scott thought- that something ought to lie done to enable the inhabitants of Block 27 to get a cart road made to their allotments.

It was resolved to set apart £350 for the purpose of making iSealey - street passable on to the block, and that the engineer he requested to see what could lie done with that amount, and to call for tenders for the work, a special meeting of the Board to be called when the plans, &c., are read\\ It; was resolved to request the Waiotahi Highway Board to assist in making a cart bridge over the Karaka Creek near Vickery’s machine, the road now being nearly impassable. Mr Scott called attention to the state of the footpath between the Karaka Bridge and Mary-strect, in Pollen-street, and said that the inhabitants were willing to subscribe money towards making the path good. The consideration of this matter was postponed until the next meeting.
