WELLINGTON. ’ Monday, January 9. Hawke’s Bay lias been proclaimed a district within the meaning of the “Native Frauds Act.” The survey of the Wellington and Mastcrton railway was commenced to-day. Air T. E. Maude has been appointed Secretary to the Resident Minister for the Middle Island. Dr Mailer, the Resident Magistrate of Blenheim is to retire on a pension. Two mysterious attempts to set fire to houses were made here on Saturday. It is supposed to he incendiarism. Jn the Resident Magistrate’s Court to- . day it was decided that the Australian Mutual Society was not liable to the stamp duty, as it is “not working on the subscribed capital.” NEW PLYMOUTH. January 9 A man named Rattcnburg accidently out his eye out ; lie is since dead.—The survey of the Waitara Railway is to be commenced immediately. Wellington, January 12.—The Insolvency Court was opened to-day. There were 14 cases, 10 from Wanganui. To Ilapuku’s case is postponed. Air Peril am, a solicitor, from Wanganui, had his final discharge suspended for six months, owing to objectionable practices before bankruptcy.—Hoskins, in the employment of Cuttcn, a butcher, has been committed for trial for stealing a shilling.—The carpenters’ and joiners’ strike continues. January 18.—Ah Fook has been committed for trial for stabbing All Gee. January 15.—The builders’ strike is over. The matter has been compromised by .reducing the hours of labour to 4G in a week.—A burglary was committed in the Synagogue on Thursday night, and a silver pointer, with pendant chain abstracted. An attempt was also made to set the building on lire. There is no suspicion of the parties in the affair. —The new Provincial buildings were commenced to-day.
