HIKUTAIA.
(I’KOM A CO HUE SCON DE N'T ). January 15, 1872. I REAP in tho Thames Advertiser of the 13th a short statement implying that the erection of the telegraph had been stopped at Omokoroa, Tauranga, by a native called Enoka, a Ngatiliana.
It is perfectly correct that Omokoroa was given to the Whaharoa, the father of William Thompson Terapipipi, and the Ngatihauas by the Ngaiterangi tribe of Tauranga. But this Enoka is a native of the Ngaitamaliarina tribe, residing at Matakana, Tauranga, of no influence whatever ; even the tribe is only a secondary one, and his connextion with the Ngatiliauas is by his wife being a sister to Tc Ilailii, of the Arolia land case notoriety, and no doubt this Mr Ilailii, as being a paid Government Assessor, has authorised his brother-in-law to raise objections as to the telegraph, and extort payment perhaps, which is most likely ; and furthermore, to annoy his old antagonist—Mr Mackay. The latter gentleman, I am confident, as soon as he makes his appearance on the disputed line, every obstacle will be set aside.
