VOLUNTEER COMPETITIVE FIRING.

Tm: representatives chosen from the different companies to compete for the honor of firing at the next. General Government competition at Christchurch have finished the shooting at the first two ranges, or have gone through the first series. In order to qualify themselves for the second scries they must score a minimum of 30 points at 200 and 300 yards out of 10 shots. This is a severe test, requiring an averago of centres, and the position at 200 yards is standing. Out of the 40 men who fired nine " have succeeded in qualifying themselves to lire at the next ranges. The Navals head the list, having passed three mombers out of six competing, and obtaining the second highest score. The Thames Scottish have passed two, as did also No. 1 R.11.R.V. No. 2 Company passed one, and the T.R.R. one. The Engineers and No. 3 H.R.V. arc unrepresented. The nine men who have passed the first scries successfully have now to fire at 400, 500, and GOO yards, five shots at each range, and any man who scores 40 points, or over, is allowed to compete at the Colonial Meeting, the four highest having their expenses paid by the Government, and any others who may qualify to go may do so, but must bear the expense themselves. The following arc the names of the men who passed, with the number of points obtained by each : Partington, T.S.V., 37 ; J. Gordon, Navals, 35 ; Sergeant Snodgrass, T.S.V., 34 ; T. F. Fenton, Rangers, 33 ; Nightingale, Navals, 32 ; Hoskins, No. 2 11.R.V., 32; J. Payne, No. 1 R.11.R.V., 32 ; Sergeant Bauer, No. 1 R.11.R.V., 31 ; and C. S. Brown, Navals, 30. Volunteer Partington’s firing was splendid, lie making 18 points at 200 and 19 at 300 yards, out of the possible 20 at each range ; and on the whole we have every reason to he satisfied with our Volunteers, and wc believe that their scores will bear comparison with those of any other district in the province, arid come off best.
