THE GRAMSTOWN WHARF.

To tlr' Eilitor of tin; 'I'IIAMES GLAIIDIAX,

Sin, —-I trust you will find space in your paper, as the. Guardian of the public, to insert a few lines in reference to a subject of some importance, viz., the. want of a light on the Grahamstown Wharf. On nearing the wharf on a hazy night, it. is next to impossible to see the obstruction until you are right on the top of it, and some serious accident will occur either to the wharf, or to the vessel that runs against it before long, unless something he done. I hear that the Government lias supplied a good light, hut expects Mr Curtis to light it. This he contends he is not bound to do,.and that it is the har-bour-master’s duty to look after it. Ido not know whose duty it is, sir, but I do know that somebody should attend to it before some serious casualty occurs, and then everybody else will say, “ Who would have thought it? What a sad affair!" and so forth. On the principle that it is better to lock the door before the horse is stolen, I think it would he heller to have a lamp, or possible two lamps, on the wharf —one at the bath-house, and one at the end. Trusting this will be looked to before a steamer comes smash inlo the wharf sonic dark night, and dues all sorts of damage.— 1 am, &c., The Master oe a Coasting Steamer. Grahamstown, Jan. 12, 1872.
