COROMANDEL.
MINING ITU MS
It in with much pleasure wo are informed —J'rom advices received by Captain Thomas, this mail, respecting the old Kapanga mine—that a largo and powerful company is formed in London, and will commence operations on a large scale almost immediately. This important work will give a great impetus to tiie adjoining valuable mines. i The Harbour View main 1 mine! is being ! pushed forward energetically, and very good progress made, although the country is very hard and had to work : lift feel at least have yet to he driven before the golden leader will he in hand. The manager intends sending a lot of about 4 1 * tons of general stub' from the stopis in the upper level, to the battery at an early 1 dale. He expects a return of at least 2 i oz. to the ton. A small leader was cut in the main drive on Saturday, from which a 1 very nice prospect was obtained by washi ing. 1 The New Zealand Company’s battery ■ was not working from Friday night till j noon yesterday, owing to the tramways
being under repair, but everything being in working order again, the battery is kept fully supplied with stuff. From the Tokatea the amalgam taken off the plates during the three day’s run last week was retorted on Monday, and gave the handsome return of 150 oz. of gold. This battery, and also the Whakaroa battery will be kept hard at work for the next few weeks to pull up for lost time during the holidays. The paddocks on the claim are quite full, and must be reduced to make room for a large quantity of stuff being taken out of the mino daily. The Specimen llill shareholders are driving a main tunnel on the leader, from which good payable stone is being taken and at once bagged up and sent to the Nil Dcsperandum battery. As the drive is proceeded with, the leader improves in appearance and solidity, and some very rich specimens are met with. The stuff—about fifty tons —being crushed at the Nil Dcsperandum battery is showing up verywell. and should give a retui'i. of between 1 and 2 oz. to the ton. The carting and crushing, at present, is very expensive, but the above return will leave a fair margin to pay wages. Yv lien machinery is erected on or near the claim, and a low level tunnel put. in to open up iue ground and give a good back to work upon, this claim will pay the fortunate shareholders handsomely.
The Venus arc making fair progress with the shaft on the boundary, and are down now about ten feet. The manager expects to cut the Green llarp leader at a depth of about 50 feet. The drives on Nos. 2 and 5 leaders are not being carried on just now, the manager preferring to sink the shaft ami wait until machinery is erected on the ground before having any more stuff crushed. Twenty tons recently crushed yielded 20 oz. gold. With machinery close at hand, 1 oz. to the ton will pay very well.— Mail
