MINING.
Caledonian. —Work is being vigorously prosecuted in the mine, and very large quantities of stone arc coining out. Tlie paddocks are all full, and there is lots •'more ready to send up. The stone is gaining rapidly on tlie crushing power at present available. The. company’s own hatteiy is not working, but will be ready to start in a few days. A small leader lias been hit and worked on in the low level, about five feet from the hangingwall of the specimen leader. It varies in size from one to six inches thick, and is very rich indeed. About 001 b. or 1001 b. of very rich specimens have been taken out. The manager is at present driving on it, towards the Golden Crown ground, and it shows splendidly. There is altogether about 3cwt of specimens on hand, the balance having been taken from tlie head of No. 3 winze, where gold is still visible. Captain Richards is preparing to continue the sinking of tlie shaft, with a view to opening up another level. This lie will be ready to do almost immediately after tlie new year.
