MINING.
COLIBAN. —The crushing of 9-£ tons from this company’s mine at Partington’s battery was completed yesterday, and the gold, amounting to 36ozs. 16dwts., was banked. It was afterwards melted, and reduced to 35ozs. lOdwts. This yield, from stuff which was only put down as second-class, is most satisfactory, and shows that the reef is very good where they have been working. This will finish their crusliings for the present year, and we hope they will continue on during the next even better than they have done this.
Lady Bowen. —At a distance of 25 feet in they cut a reef about three feet thick, in which gold was seen. This find was unexpected, as they thought they would have to drive at least 50 feet before getting anything. Work is at present suspended until after the holidays. Frying Cloud. —Yesterday morning the manager brought down a further quantity of about 1 cwt. of picked stuff, this being the third lot during the last two days, making altogether about 160 lbs. It was crushed yesterday at the single stamper, at the Manukau battery, but the return is not yet to hand. To-day a clean up will take place from the general stuff, and the lot will be lodged together. In our yesterday’s issue it was stated that they were getting the gold within 13 feet of the Black Angel boundary. It should have been 130 feet.. Cyclops (UpperTararu).—The low level tunnel is in a distance of 107 feet towards the reef, and the country has changed considerably for the belter, having got much softer. It will not take very long now to open up into the reef, and prove it at a good depth. Imperial Crown (Tribute). —The crushing of about 20 tons of general stuff was finished yesterday at the Herald battery, and gave the very satisfactory yield of 37ozs. 12dwts., which, together with the yield from the specimens, gives a total of 1460z5. 12dwts., or at the rate of 7ozs' 6dwts. to the ton. Herald Battery. —ls head of stampers are engaged crushing for the Moanataiari company at tlr’s battery, and the 5 head vacated by the Imperial Crown tribute are now on Alburnia stuff. Albion Tribute (late Kelly’s). A crushing- of about 24 tons of blue quartz from this tribute was finished at the Manukau battery yesterday, and gave the good return of 33ozs. lOdwts. 12grs. of melted gold. The lode from which this stone was taken runs from 6 inches to a foot wide, and tills is the first crushing of blue stone from tho ground which lias turned out payable. All Nations. —The usual monthly clean up for this company will take place to-day at the Kuranui battery. A quantity of good specimens were reduced at the single stamp yesterday, and the amalgam will be retorted with that from the general stuff. It is impossible to estimate the probable yield, as the boxes have not been touched yet, and until they are opened no correct opinion can be formed. WIIAU. —A clean up took place yesterday for this company at the Manukau battery, after about six days run with ten head, and gave a return of 67ozs. sdwts. of gold, which is about the usual average of the stuff from their reef. Tookey Tribute (Woods’ No. 2). — Twelve tons of stone was crushed for this tribute party at the Manukau machine, and gave a result of llozs. of melted gold. Californian Tribute. An excellent return of 2660z5. ltdwts. of gold was lodged yesterday, as the result of the last fortnight’s crushing. This decided improvement in the returns is highly satis factory, and from present appearances good returns are likely to be kept up, the reef looking really well. City of Dunedin. —The annual meeting of the company was held yesterday afternoon, at the Governor Bowen Hotel, Grahainstown. The directors’ and mine manager’s reports were read and adopted. From the directors’ report it appears that the total amount of gold taken from the mine previous to the formation of the company was 3,7280z5., of the value of £11,720, which had been expended as follows: £660 in purchase of adjoiningground, tunnel at present in use, and lease expenses ; wages and cost of working mine, £5,412 3s Grl ; paid away in dividends, £5,300, leaving a balance in band of £347 16s 6d, which had been handed over to the company when formed. Since the formation of the company the sum of £1,370 3s 3d has been expended in permanent works and general expenses. The liabilities of the company are £359, and the assets amount to £654 3s sd, as follows : Balance in bank, £47 3s sd; unpaid calls, £232, and uncalled capital, £375. The mine manager’s report stated that from survey they required to go ahead with the present low level drive 50 feet before getting under tne run of gold worked on above, and also stated that thestuff being crushed now, and which was taken frem the upper level block, was shaping much better fora payable return than the last few crushings have done. These reports and the balance-sheet were all adopted, and the following report, by Messrs Stanning and Kernick was read and approved of by tho meeting : Grahamstowu, December 14th 1871. To the Directors of the City of Dunedin G.M.C. Gentlemen, —In accordance with your instructions, we have the honor to inform you that we have carefully examined your mine, and we are unanimous of opinion that the run of Gold which has been followed down for such a distance through your ground, will, in all probability, continue to make downwards ; but that the low level tunnel has not been driven far enough to the South to meet with the run. We would therefore beg to recommend that the tunnel be driven with all possible despatch, and as the lode in the present face of the drive is very hard and expensive for working on, we would reccommend that the drive be carried on, in the hanging-wall (or west side of the lode), carrying a portion of the lode with it. The lode could then he cut through at different places, and thoroughly tested. That the drive above the tunnel also be carried on as there is a large block of ground in this direction undeveloped. This drive should also be put in in accordance with the above.
Taking into consideration the large area of ground, and that little or no prospecting has been done further than working on the run of gold, we would recommend for the furtherdevelopment of your mine, that a cross-cut diive be put in to the east of the low levertunnel for the purpose of prospecting and testing other lodes that may be found to run parallel to the one already worked on. We have the honour Gentlemen, to he, Your Obedient Servants, Signed John Kernick. James llenrick. The old directors having retired, the following were elected : —Messrs J. De Hirscii, Wm. Souter, O. Sorenson, Jules Wilson. Wm. McKinstry, Walter Dowden, James Heron. After the general meeting a meeting of the directors was held, at which James De Hirscii, Esq., was elected chairman, and a plan of operations as to the future working of the mine was decided on.
