FIRE BRIGADE.
Yesterday aftertioon a series of experiments were made at the various Fire plugs in Gralmtnstown, to try the new hydrants which have been made by Messrs. Price & Co. at their foundry. The hose was not found to be strong enough to bear the full pressure of the water in the mains, consequently it was turned on at only half force. This, with 13-16 inch nozzle was found to act very well indeed, throwing a stream of water over the houses in Albert-street. With a 10-lGinch nozzle the hose hurst, not being strong enough to bear the increased pressure. A large quantity of new hose has been ordered for the use of the Brigade, some I,COO feet altogether, and when this arrives, there is no doubt but that the full
pressure of the water will be able to bo made use of. The experiments of yesterday must be considered very satisfactory indeed, with the present appliance, and when everything is in perfect order, we shall possess a means of overcoming fire far superior to anything in the province. The hydrants acted excellently, fitting all the plugs well, and the water was turned on and off with the greatest ease by the officers of the Brigade, who were present. The Government Engineer was present and watched the proceedings all through, end was very well satisfied at the manner in which the gear acted. All the Fireplugs along the streets were tried in turn and all are in good working order.
