PROVINCIAL COUNCIL.
TUESDAY, DECEMBER 19. The following is the only portion of the proceedings in the Provincial Council last Tuesday of interest to our readers: — MESSAGE 21. The Speaker read Message No, 21 received from the Superintendent, enclosing supplementary estimates for the year 1872.—They were referred to the Committee on the Estimates, and ordered to be printed. COMMITTEE OF SUPPLY. The Council went into Committee of Supply to further consider the Estimates, Mr Farmer in the chair. The following items were agreed to: —Harbour-master and pilot, Shortland, £l5O ; contingencies, £SO ; improvements in small harbours, £l5O. Aid to Vokutecrs, £3OO : This item was struck out, as well as the item vaccination, £so.—The following items were agreed to: Purchase of site for Auckland cemetery, £SOO ; roads and works north of Auckland, £2,000 ; roads and works south of Auckland, £4,500. Mr Shepherd moved that the item be postponed, which motion was negatived, and the item, as originally proposed, was agreed to.—Purchase of native lands, £2,000 ; works in Poverty Bay district, £250; encouragement of fisheries in accordance with recommendation of the Fisheries Committee, 1871, £4OO. —Aloanataiari aqueduct, £650 ; Mr Mackay moved that this item he reduced by £SOO. Committee divided : —Ayes, 4; noes, 9. The item was agreed to as printed.—Beach road, Shortland and Grahamstown, £4,0n0. The Council resumed ; progress was reported, and leave given to sit again next day. SUPPLEMENTARY ESTIMATES OF EXPENDITURE. Inspector of Weights and Measures, Auckland, £l5O ; superintendent and matron of Refuge, £75 ; fuel and light for Mount Eden gaol, £212 ; burials of pauper Hospital patients, £l5O ; police—expenses of special constables for city of Auckland. 1871, £166; expenditure on Provincial Council Buildings, £IBB 9s 5d ; harbour-master and pilot for Shortland harbour, £175 ; 2 boatmen, Shortland harbour, at £6 per month each, £144 ; new buoy,Thames river,£2s; Sub-Inspector of Police, Thames district, £250 ; additional salary to chief clerk to Warden, Thames, £SO ; refund of wholesale license fee paid by Messrs Cruickshank, Smart, and Co., £2O ; roads and works North of Auckland, £3,000 ; in aid of Volunteers, Auckland district, £IOO ; in aid of Volunteers, Thames district, £125 ; in aid of Volunteers, Waiuku and Wairoa districts, £125 ; in aid of free public library and museum, £1,000; native land purchase (additional), £1,100; special order for 1871, £2,443 18s lid ; purchase of public recreation ground, cemetery, hospital site, and rifle range, at the Thames, £1,000; construction of road to southern boundaiy of Thames goldfield. £3,000; opening and development of new goldfields, £I.OOO. — In compliance with address of Council: Refund of wholesale license-fee paid by Messrs Hooper, Oliffe, and Co., brewers, £2O ; in aid of Cadet Corps Volunteers, £100; establishment of Female Reformatory, £2OO ; in aid of Auckland Mechanics’ Institute, £7.5 ; in aid of Thames Mechanics’ Institute. £IOO ; erection of lock-up at Howick, £l5O ; grant to family of the late Rev E. 11. Huywood, £l5O.
