KAUWAERANGA DISTRICT BOARD.
A special meeting of this Board was held yesterday at noon, to consider the question of handing over the water supply to a Joint Stock Company. All the members were present. It was moved by Mr Lipsey, seconded by Scott, and unanimously carried—“ That this Board has heard with regret tliat it is contemplated by the Provincial Government to hand over to a private company the waterworks recently laid down for the purpose of supplying the inhabitants of Parawai, Shorthand, and Grahamstowu with water for domestic purposes on the terms at present published; that the trustees consider that a greater act of improvidence and abuse could not be committed than to make over to any private association the right to traffic iu this most essential element of existence and health ; that it would be only simple justice on the part of Government to replace by artificial means a supply of pure water to those districts or parts thereof whose natural streams have been polluted, and other sources of supply cut off and destroyed, through operations which have been the means of raising the very revenue whereby the works have been executed, which it is now proposed to farm out to private speculation ; and that, therefore, if any change he made, it is the duty of the Government to complete the works in hand, by laying down mains in the principal thoroughfares, and then to hand them over to the local Highway Boards of the above-mentioned districts,.to l>e maintained either by rate, fixed annually by the inhabitants themselves, or by some other means, hereafter to he agreed upon.” It was moved by Mr Walli utt, seconded by Mr Lipsey, and agreed— • Tliat copies of the above resolution be sent to the Goldfields Members aud the Goldfields Secretary."
