THE OPERA
On Saturday night, the Cagli-Pompei Troupe gave their farewell performance of “ Martha” to a fair house. We were disappointed at not seeing tlie place filled as we fully expected to sec it, but it is evident that the Thames does not possess a very largo number of real lover," of music, or they would never have missed such a treat as that prepared for them on Saturday night. As the merits of the various performers are so well known to the public, we will say nothing on that point, but that the leading characters were admirably sustained throughout. Signora Coy, who by her pleasant voice and gracefully natural style of acting, has constituted herscl f a very great favorite here, sustained her role as Lady Harriet in a manner which was decidedly keenly appreciated by the audience, as was testified hy the frequent applause tendered her during the course of the opera. In the air so well known and loved by all Irishmen, ‘‘Tiie East Rose of Summer,” she fairly earned the encore which was demanded and given in such a manner as to cause a thrill of delight to every son or daughter of Erin present. Signora Polli, too, deserves a word of praise for the manner in which she played Nancy. (Jrandi, of course, was a first-rate “old man.” and looked the blufi" old English squire all over. Signors Coy and Tournerie will leave a good impression behind them, both having acted (especially the latter) and sang well. Signor Dondi’s “Bay of Biscay” was, of course, well sung, and was very amusing, an encore being demanded, when he sang another English song, in which he “ Died for love and victory.” AVo shall look hack with very great pleasure to the musical treat we have enjoyed during the past fortnight for some time to come, and, in bidding adieu to the Italian Opera Troupe, we cordially wish them every success in their future wanderings through the world, and a safe and happy return to their native land, only hoping that they will hear witli them as kindly feelings towards us as we do to them.
