THE OPERA.
Verdi’s “La Traviata” was played last night, at the Theatre Royal, to a far smaller audience than sucii a production ever ought to ho performed. Signora Coy, as Violetta, had full scope for the display of her power as an actress, and, being in excellent voice, we may say that last night she not only added another laurel to those already won on the Thames, hut that she fairly eclipsed all her previous performances during the present short season. Her singing all through was so good that we can scarcely particularise ; but we would give the palm to the duet in the Second Act with Alfredo, “ Say to this child of thine,” and that in the third, “Come, then, from Paris,” in both of which the singing and acting were most enchanting and effective. Signor Coliva, of course, sang well, he always does, the air “From Provence, sea and land,” being magnificently rendered. Signor Rosnati showed an amount of feeling in his acting last night which we hardly expected from him, and sang as well as ho usually does, than which wc cannot say any more. To-night the Cagli Pompei Troupe give their farewell performance, and wc feel sure that they will he well patronised on that account, as well as on account of the opera to be produced “ Martha.”
