BANQUET TO MR. W. ROWE.

An influential meeting of persons desirous of expressing their deep sense of gratitude to Mr Itowc for the valuable services be b(is rendered to the Thames goldfield. Mr Nolan was called to the chair, and Mr Craig acted secretary pro. tern. Mr BitODiE stated that Mr O drey, who was acting as provisional secretary, was away with all tho papers connected with this meeting, as it had been previously arranged to get the affair tip privately. As there were so many persons present, he did not think they si ould depart without expressing their views on the subject. He had been given to understand that it was the intention of a number of gentlemen of presenting Mr W. Rowe with a memento previous to his departure from the Thames. Mr Rowe intended visiting the goldfields of Australia, and also New Guinea and New Caledonia., He did not think it necessary to eulogise Mr Rowe’s doings here. He had stuck to them through thick and thin, and he thought that Mr Rc e should not be allowed to depart wl bout a warm expression of the general public. He should propose that a banquet should bo given Mr Rowe as a slight acknowledgment of the many valuable services lie had rendered the Thames. Mr James Craig, in seconding the motion, said he could heartily endorse every word which the previous speaker had said, and lie only hoped that Mr Rowe would have a good banquet. He (Mr Rowe) had undoubtedly saved this place from bankruptcy. If the Caledonian mine bad not turned out as it bad, tlieie would have been no knowing wliat would have become of this place. The motion was put to the meeting, and unanimously carried. Mr BRODiEthen proposed the following: gentlemen as a working committee, to carry out all the necessary arrangements : —Messrs Nolan, Pierce, James, Brodie, Phillips, Oldrey, T. L. Murray, Hannaford, Breton, Hayward, Craig, Goodall, Lloyd, Kneebone, P. Griffin, with power to add to their number.

Mr T. L. Murray Avas appointed treasurer, and Mr Oldrey secretary.
