THE OPERA.
Last night Rossini’s opera of the “ Barber of Seville ” was produced to a very small but appreciative audience at the Theatre Royal. As might have been expected, those present enjoyed a musical treat not often afforded to a Thames audience, and showed their appreciation of it by frequent and enthusiastic applause. Signora Cortesi as Rosina sang sweetly, and in the third act, when taking her singing lesson from Don Alonzo (the Count) she rendered the ballad commencing “ An old man would be wooing” in such a manner as to demand a rapturous encore, which was gracefully responded to. The Figaro of Signor Tournerie wo had been told to look out for, and wo were not disappointed, tlie character of “ The Barber ” receiving ample justice at bis hands. “ The Doctor ” of Signor Grandi was a iinished piece of acting, and ivell merited tlie applause it gained. He is, without doubt, a great “old man,” and onlj* requires to be seen to be appreciated. The remaining parts call for no special mention, if wc may be allowed to except Don Bazillio (Signor Dondi), whose acting was only secondary to his singing. To-night, Signor Cagli promises to give us “ Salto,” if sufficient inducement is offered ; but it certainly would be demanding too much to expect the troupe to play it before such small audiences as have frequented the Theatre for the last two nights.
