HARBOR AT THAMES. Auckland, Dec. 8, Tp.m. In the Provincial Council to-day a motion for supplying tea and coffee to members at the public expense "was carried. The Superintendent transmitted a message, in reply to the address from the Council, suggesting that the General Government should be requested to construct Harbor Works at the Port of Thames under the Public Works and Immigration Act, 1870. He pointed out to the Council that such a work as that proposed had uot only not been authorised by the Act, but that works of that character had not been contemplated under it. His recommendation of such a work, therefore, would simply be recommending a construction to be put on the Act that the Act itself would not bear. . He requested the Council to give him a definite idea of the nature of the harbor works they desired to have constructed, and he would endeavor to negotiate with the General Government. He would gladly co-operate with the General Government in carrying out works for the benefit of the Thames, but declined responsibility in negotiating with the Government without a more definite expression of the Council’s views.' The Thames and Coromandel Public Works Estimates passed unaltered in Comniitte of Supply ; also the votes for the sick and destitute, hospital, lunatic asylum, and gaol.
