MINING.

City of London. —ln our report of this mine yesterday a mistake occurred in the number of shares in the company. It should have been 5,000. and not 15,000 as printed. Bank of New Zealand. —Yesterday morning the manager brought down to town some stone taken from a leader cut in the drive, which is about 4 inches wide. This is not supposed to be the Multum-in-Parvo reef proper, so they are going to continue ahead some distance still. The stone looks very well indeed, some of it being similar to what is expected, but no gold is visible in it. Tin's reef lias taken a great deal of looking for, and the shareholders deserve some reward for their perseverance in working such a length of time without any return for their outlay. No great quantity of water has come in as yet, which strengthens the belief that this is not the reef sought for. Golden Calf. —They are still sinking in soft good country, and making rapid progress. The stuff has got much darker in color, and is full of small veins of mundie. From the general appearance it looks as if they were now on the casing of some reef, and we expect every shift to hear that they have touched it. The inflow of water will most probably be very heavy but with their present appliances they will be able to get rid of it all easy enough and keep it under. The shares have been in good demand since they first got the gold, and have increased very much in value, as have also the Central Italy shares. The total depth of the shaft is now about 324 feet, aud soon it will be one of the deepest on the field.

Inverness, —The night before last the v-men driving on the Kuranui tunnel level came lon to some gold, and a quantity of nice specimens were taken out. Yesterday, too, some more were brought down, and gold could he traced right up the face of the hanging wall. There is some 5 feet of crushing stuff from wall to wall, gold being visible in the stone on the foot-wall, as well as on the other side. The reef towards the All Nations boundary, which is about 15 feet away, is rather broken, but where worked on, running into their own ground, is welldefined and strong. There is very little doubt hut that they have got a splendid body of stone to work on, and one which will, from the show, prove very valuable. Stone is accumulating in the paddocks, there being some 50 tons to grass at the Don Pedro end of the mine in which good gold is seen, and from which good specimens have been taken. It will take some days yet to complete the working communication between the upper and lower levels, but when this is once done, large quantities of stone can be obtained. They have only driven a few feet on the reef from where it was cut in the drive, but are now working a-bead, and will soon be far enough to commence breaking down from this level.

Star of the Thames. —The crushing of about 30 tons of stone from this claim was completed yesterday at the Tramway battery, and gave a result far better than was looked for. It turned out 157 ozs., including the specimens which were on hand, being at the rate of about 5 ozs. to the ton. ozs. would have been regardad as satisfactory, and was about what was expected. This excellent yield from a reef the size (over four feet) must be regarded as very rich indeed, and more specimens were picked out yesterday morning ; in fact, nearly every shift see good gold. This crushing will enable the directors to pay a dividend probably of one shilling on 5,400 shares, which is not bad for a company which has only been formed a few weeks. They can send down more stone as soon as the hopper is available, hut it is at present in use by the Middle Star people. There is another large reef in tho ground, from which 50 tons are to he sent down as a trial, to be crushed. Gold has been seep, and they expect that it will pay to work it, as they can get on to it at a fine low level Flying Cloud.—A crushing for this claim was commenced last night, at the Manukau battery,.when the crushing for Wood's tribute was completed. There are altogether about 50 tons ready for the mill, and it is expected to yield well. A large quantity can be sent clown in a short time, now that they have got the mine in good working order.

Poverty and Charleston Tribute. — A crushing is going on at the Manukau battery for these tributers, Dixon’s No. 1 having stopped for a few days, the wire tramway being employed by the Flying Cloud.

Una. —We aro glad to see that another dividend is about to be declared by the directors in this company, the increase in the quantity of the stone crushed enabling them to do so.

Works, Tookey’s Tribute. —Crushing for this party is going on at the Prince Alfred battery, with 16 head of stampers, and is making a good show on the plates for a payable return. Otago. —The winze on No. 2 lode is now down about 27 feet, and gold is seen as they sink. A good quantity of quartz from both Nos. 1 and 2 lodes is stacked round the shaft ready to be sent to the mill.

Tookey Co. —The drive along the reef from the Caledonian side is now in abont 15 feet, the country being pretty hard. The manager intends to get in some 20 feet further before he thinks of opening out, in order to give plenty of room for working. The drive from the 200 foot level in the company’s own shaft is also making good progress to meet the other, and everything is in a very satisfactory state about the mine.

Blac k [Anger. —Yesterday about lOOlbs of stone was crushed at Spencer and Hall's test battery, and gave the very satisfactory return of 27ozs lOdwts of gold. Ihe stuff was taken as it came from the reef, and was not picked, there being a lot of mullock and stuff in with it. The manager has commenced to open out from the bottom of the winz r, aud yesterday good gold was again seen whilst the}' were at work.

Mary Ann. —The reef is improving in appearance and size as it is driven on, aud gold has been seen frequently. We were shown some stone containing gold yesterday which was taken from the lode. Breaking down will soon be commenced, and as soon as a sufficient quantity is out crushing will be commenced. New Caledonia. —This company have had to stop crushing at the Criterion batteiy owing, we believe, to the scarcity of water. They cleaned up last night, but the result is not to hand yet. The manager intends sending down some 20 tons to the flat to be crushed directly, aud breaking down stone will be continued.

George Stephenson. —Another lot of specimens were taken out of this leader yesterday. Some large stone we saw was really splendid-. Crushing yvill take place next week, when besides the general stuff the speeimeus on hand noiy.amounting to over OOlbs. will be and from their appearance'will yield heavily. 23rd of June.— This company commence crushing .with ten head at thej Waiotahi battery to-night. Their tramway is now finished, and they can send the stuff direct from' the-hopper, into the trucks. There will be between 90 and 100 tons crushed, besides some specimens, and a good return is confidently looked for. Junction. —The winze going down on the reef from the Kuranui tunnel level is now sung for a, depth of 22 feet on'the reef, which is rather -broken just at present, but will probably come in again as they sink on it. Biughton. —6ozs lldwts of gold were lodged yesterday in the Bank of New Zealand, the result of some trial crusbings made at this company’s battery. Standard. —The crushing of quartz from the upper levels still shows as good as ever. Yesterday a trial of stone from the middle levels was commenced, and to the surprise of everybody, promises fo 3’ield far better, than anything taken from the upper workings, the show on the plates, after some hours run, being richer than has yet been seen. This is very satisfactory, as there arc large backs to be worked on from the level.

Moanataiari Union. —The company have bought out the tributers, and are now going to work the mine themselves. Besides the leader which has been worked on and yielded so well, for these tributers, there are two other gold bearing lodes in hand, and stone is now being broken out from all these for crushing, which will be commenced in a short time. This company has now a prospect before them, and with good management ought to give good returns.
