MINING.
Cock-a-Doodle. — About 40 tons of stone have been put through at the Missouri battery. The result is 21ozs. retorted gold, including the specimens. The gold is of extra quality, and always fetches within a few shillings of £3 per ounce. The main reef is now being driven on to the north, and looks well, though no specimens have yet been met with. It is expected that the rich shot of gold worked on early in the year in the upper level will be reached in about 30 feet. The reef runs north and south, and stands nearly perpendicular, so that this company have about. 400 feet of it travelling their ground, with very little chance of its dipping away from them till very many lower levels have been worked. The manager intends to open out to the south also, and as there is any quantity of quartz which can b& easily broken down, the reef being a large one, the battery will bo kept going without any further interruption for some time to come. Golden Sitr.—A crushing for the tributers of this claim was compacted yesterttrday at Grove’s Battery, and gave a very satisfactory yield. Niue tons were put through, which yielded Bozs. 2dwts. of melted gold. North Star. — This ground, lately known as the Wandering Star, and from which some excellent returns were obtained by the former shareholders, was purchased by Mr F. J. Warded for the sum of £IOO. The low level tunnel is now in to within 40 feet of the reef, and when it has reached it, there will be backs of over 80 feet to work on as soon as the winze is sunk down to meet the drive. From the last stone taken from the winze 2ozs. to the ton was obtained, when the water drove them out.
Star of the Thames. —This company has now been registered, so that the Shooting Star has ceased to exist. Crushing will be commenced at the Tramway battery on Monday, and a good return is expected from the general stuff, besides which the specimens will yield well. Queensland.— Work is being vigorously prosecuted in this mine. The old Ruby reef has been cut, and good prospects obtained from it. A lease has been applied for, and the shareholders arc confident of success.
Moanataiakj. —The amount of specimens is being increased day by day, a good quantity having been brought up yesterday and the night before last. There are now on hand about 2501b5., and a good addition is expected before next clean up. The prospects of this company seem to be brightening considerably of late, and larger returns of gold are looked for. Inverness. —The manager is now breaking down the reef at the funnel or lowest level, and good gold has been taken from it ; in fact, the prospects are very encouraging. The stone is being brought out into the paddock, to be in readiness for sending to the mill, which will soon be done now.
