NATIVES AND KAURI TIMBER.
"We aro glad to learn that an arrangement lias been come to between the native owner and the parties who cut the kauri trees at Tapu, to which we referred a few days ago. We understand that the parties paid to the owner a sum of £'2o, in consideration of which he allowed them to again get possession of the timber which has been seized.. We arc not aware whether the Inspector of Miners’ ltights will feel bound to bring the parties up for a breach of the Goldfields Regulations, indeed in this case we think the parties have had to pay pretty well for their neglect, and it is not unlikely that they have had to pay for the sins of others —who escaped. This case ought to be a warning to others, and we have no doubt but that the authorities had that object in view when the Inspector was sent to Tapu.
