POLICE COURT.— Yesterday.

(Before H. C. Lawlor Esq., J.P., and 11. Goldsmith Esq., J.P.) Drunkenness. —Cornelius Scully, charged with being drunk and disorderly in Brownstreet the previous night, was fined 20s, with the usual alternative in case of nonpayment. Neglecting to Keei* iiis Lamp Burning.—Louis Rose James, landlord of the Q.C.E. Hotel, Mary-street, was charged by Constable Furlong with neglecting to keep a lamp burning over his licensed house, between the hours of sunset and sunrise on the 9th and 10th instants.— Mr. James said the lamp was out, but it happened under mitigating circumstances. He had lent his ladder to the people building the church, and could not get at the lamp without climbing up the outer wall and risking a severe tumble. As soon as his attention was called to tiro matter he put it right.—ln answer to the Bench, Mr. Bullen said this was the first case against Mr. James, and, under the circumstances, he should not press for a penalty.—The Bench fined the defendant in the nominal sum of one shilling and costs, which was immediately paid.—Mr. Bullen observed that, under tlie new Act, the obligation cast upon the publican to keep a lamp burning was done away with. Stray Horses. —Esau Walters, charged with permitting one horse to wander at large in Mary-street,and another in Mackaystreot, was ordered to pay a penalty of 2s Gd and costs i». each case. Transfer of License.— Abraham Jacobs applied to have his license for the Golden Age Hotel, Waiotahi Creek, transferred to Albert Butler, which was granted.
