THE LATE FATAL ACCIDENT AT KAUWAERANGA.

To the Editor of the THAMES GUARDIAN. Sir; — I think the public are performing a very graceful and appropriate act in raising a fund for the assistance of the widow and children of the late John Beaty, but I think, at the same time, that the meritorious conduct of Mr. N. I’. Carver is being rather overlooked. At the inquest held on the body of the boy Joseph Quinn, it will be remembered that the jury returned a verdict '‘that the deceased met his death by accidental drowning, adding a rider that the place where the accident occurred was a dangerous one, and that the authorities should prevent as far as possible all persons from bathing there, and that the conduct of Mr N. P. Carver in rescuing the bodies was very meritorious, and deserved the highest approbation. The Coroner observed that he fully concurred ii the verdict and recommendation of the jury.” In this verdict and the coroner’s remark 1 fully concur, i would suggest some

sort of compromise, in the shape of a watch or piece of plate, or other memento, with a suitable inscription, should be presented to Mr Carver, who unhesitatingly risked his life, as did the unfortunate man John Batey, though happily with less melancholy results.. Leaving the matter to the good sense and feeling of the public, —I am, &e., An Admirer of True Courage.
