CHRISTCHURCH RACES.
T clegrupUcd Specially for the GUARDIAN*. Christchurch, Tuesday. The first day of the meeting was quite a success, the weather was delightful. For the Maiden Plate, Defarmation ran a wonderful horse, and fully supported the opi. on of the backers. Patch ran a good second, Gossip being third. The Lottery Plate was a walk over, as anticipated, for Slander. The Cup was a magnificent race. The favourite, Nottinglcy, got away on slightly disadvantageous terms, hut before going 100 yards he came up within a neck of Peeress, and his jockey rode him in splendid style. The excitement of the crowd was immense as the horses came up the “ run in.” It was thought at first that Nottingly had actually won, and it was not till the telegraph showed a “ dead heat” that the public were satisfied. On the two horses coming to the post to decide the dead heat the excitement was terrific, and it required all the vigilance of the police to keep the course clear. Betting was certainly in favour of the mare. Both horses got away together, hut it was soon clearly evident to all that Nottingly was not in it, as Peeress took the lead, and maintained it all through, winning easily hands down. The Free Handicap fell to the lot of Envoy, as expected by all. Wednesday. There were quite as many present to witness the second days racing, and if possible the weather was even finer, a pleasant breeze blowing all day. The “ going” was in first rate order. The first event was the Hurdle Race, which Sir Tatton won. Medora ran a moderate second. Ronalds caught the judge’s eye for aplace, the others were well up, among them Alma and Patch, who occupied fourth and fifth places respectively. Detraction carried off theDerbyStakes in a comparatively easy manner. In the Jockey Club Handicap Peeress started a hot favourite, no doubt owing to the clever way in which she won the cup. Yesterday,Exile ran her close for some time, hut at the distance she easily shook him off and came in a winner by several lengths. The Criterion Stakes was a very hollow affair. Slander literally walked in, and won in the commonest of canters. Lacenfeed pulled off the Grand Stand Handicap, Southern Chief second, and Yattarina third. You will doubtless have the results of the running through Grevillc’s company. 1 send this independently of them.
