THE LATE FATAL ACCIDENT AT THE KAUERANGA CREEK.
MEETING AT THE ACADEMY OF MUSIC. A numerously attended meeting wasjield at the Academy of Music, on Saturday evening, Mr. J. Banks in the chair. In opening the proceedings the Chairman said : You are all well aware of the sad and melancholy circumstances which surround us in connection with the late disaster. It is useless to enter into discussion, but let us unanimously proceed to elect a permanent “ Relief Committee,” whose endeavours will, I hope, meot with unexceptionable success, and the confidence of the public. The follo wing were elected a committee: —Messrs. W. Fraser, R.f11., Carey, Bull, F. Day, McCade, Daykin, H. L. Murdoch, G. Alexander, O’Leary, P. Griffin (represcntativcof thellibernian Society), McCullogh.Hanaford, Dewar, Wildinan, Knoops. Grove, Hornsby, Rowe, West, J. Wood, E. Thomas, P. Wood, Rockcliffe (Tapu) ; * Messrs. F. Woollams, C. Ring, Harrison, Horne, Kelly (Coromandel) 5 and the clergy of all denominations. Messrs. J. Banks Knox, and Rev. V. Lush were appointed trustees ; treasurer, T. L. Murray ; honorary secretary, Mr. Pulleine. The following resolutions were passed ; Proposed by Mr Nosworthy, seconded by Mr T. Sandks, “That an adveitisement be inserted in the local papers requesting ladies interested in forwarding the objects of the relief fund to meet the Secretary at the Home Institute, on Tuesday next, at 3 p.rn.” This was put and carried unanimously. Proposed by Mr Perrier, seconded by Mr Grove, “ That the committee meet on Wednesday evening next, at the Pacific Hotel, at 7 p.m,, and that the Secretary advertise for all persons having private lists to communicate with him before that time.” The Chairman stated that the immediate wants of the widow and children had been amply provided for, and that an account had been opened at the Bank of New Zealand, to which any monies could be placed. It was intended to make a permanent investment, and no monies would be withdrawn until the fund was closed. Mr. F. Humphries said if luid been suggested to him by several gentlemen that some recognition should be made of the gallant conduct of Mr. P. N. Carver in recovering the bodies of the drowned persons ; and he would suggest that some testimonial should lie presented. The Chairman concurred, but thought this should form the subject of a separate meeting, A vote of syujpathy to the \yidow and of thanks and admiration to Mr. Carver, and " to the hoy Read were unanimously Voted. A vote of thanks to the Chairman for his able conduct in the chair terminated the proceedings. The Committee are requested fo meet punctually at 7 p.m, on Wednesday next, dt the Pacific Hotel.
