KAUAERANGA DISTRICT BOARD.

A MEETING of the Kauaeranga District Board was held last evening, at the office of the Secretary. Present —Messrs.. Burgess (in the chait}, Scott, Mill, Lipsey, and Walnutt. Mr. Cameron, the Engineer, and Mr. Perston, the Secretary, were also present. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The Chairman said he had seen Mr. Sheshan on the subject of the powder magazine. The sits was chosen, and preliminary arrangements had been made, but it would require a special vote of the Provincial Council before the work would be carried but. The Chairman stated that the contractors would have to close up a portion, of Willoughby-street for a short time, during the alterations and improvements now in progress. The Secretary stated that the overdraft at the bank'was £291 18s 7d, but he had funds which would reduce it to £284 9s sd. Mr. Litsey asked Mr. Cameron whether ;h© knew of two men permanently. emiployed by the Board working for private iparties on the race-course. 'Mr. Cameron said he believed the men <did work ou the race-course for about three hours, for Borne carpenters, but he believed they had made up the time to the Board, but he was not certain. Mr. Scott said he thought this was a very bad practice, and caused ratepayers to make unpleasant complaint. The other members of the Board concurred, and resolved to issue an order, forbidding the men to work for other people whilst in the Board’s employ. The following report of the Engineer W&8 TGfld !— * “To the Members of the Kauaeranga District Board. “ Gentlemen,—l have the honour to inform you that the contractors for the -metalling of Mary-street, and forming and metalling Willoughby-street and Karaka Road, are progressing favourably with providing and preparing metal tor tne same. The contract for the erection • of the fence enclosing the Maon allotmen in Rolleston-street has been completed three weeks, and the contractors are en-

titled to their contract money as per agreement, with extra 10s, for fixing wire fence round the public pound. I have further •to inform you that I had one team of drays, three daya carting gravel from the Hape Creefc Heale streets ; also two teams for three days making good seven chains of the lower end of Karaka Road, being that portion which was laid with fascines/in the beginning of winter. I have a*lso 'Bad' 15loads of rough gravel carted into Pol-len-street, a,t_3s per load. X was compelled to employ an additional laborer to assist in loading the drays. / I beg also to inform you that the water-tables of Sealey, .Richmond, and Willoughby streets, at their intersection with the beach, have got choked up with shell, and-’to employ labor to clear the same by throwing the stuff aside would be useless. I would recommend the Board to, employ..a team for two days, to have it . carted to the'footpaths in Pollen-street or the low parts in Richmond-street. , “I am, gentlemen, i ; “ Your obedient servant, “T. Cameron, “ Engineer. “ Shortland, Oct. 30, 1871.” On the motion of Mr seconded by Mr Scott, it was resolved that the sand from the water tables be carted to Pollenstreet and other places where it was required,—water tables to be cut along Mackay-street, from Sealey-street to Richmond-street. It was resolved to apply to the Goldfields Secretary to fix the terminus of the Hape tramway. A letter Was read from the Government Engineer asking the concurrence of the Board to have the water pipes laid in Pollen-street 10 feet from the kerbing. i This was assented to. j A letter from L. H. J. Connell, complaining of his assessment, coqld not /be‘ entertained, as the appeal had passed. The property in question is an allotment in Mackay-street, No. 538, assessed.>tJE6?, Jvjihicn the owner stated in his letter, was twice its value. The Chairman said he had spoken to the Goldfields Secretary in reference-to the amount of contribution from the Government to the Board, and that Mr Sheehan had given a favorable reply.., . Mr Lipsey observed' that Mf Sheehan was not the man to break anybody’s heart with a rough answer. (Laughter).
