AMUSEMENTS.
Theatre Royal.— There was a very good attendance at the Theatre Royal on Saturday, especially in the pit. The “Cornish Lass ” was produced, nnd was very well received by the audience. The acting of Miss A. Bowring as the “ Cornish Lass,” and of Mr. J. B. Steele as Job Polwhele was very good, and they were well supported by the rest of the company. The piece is by Boucicault, and abounds in thrilling incidents, and is said to be founded upon facts, connected with the life of a Cornish miner. It is to be repeated until further notice, and will bear repetition. The laughable farce of a “Bull in a China Shop” concluded the evening’s entertainment. Academy of Music. —The Merchant of Venice was produced on Saturday to a very good house. Mr Hoskins played Gratiauo witli a thorough appreciation of .the author. Miss Colville as Portia presented a peaceful portraiture of that heroic character. Mrs Hill as Narissa assisting materially by her finished and artistic acting to the success of the piece. Mr Burford’s rendering of Shylock was in parts very good. Mr Jones as Antonio, and Mr Booth as Bassinno, performed their parts very creditably, and they were well supported by Messrs Hydes, Thorpe, Glover, Strike, and McCabe. A portion of the Serious Family concluded the evening’s programme. Great preparations are being made for the production of the Lancashire Lass. The scenery is by Mr Frank Varley.
