CRICKET.

MARRIED V. SINGLE. On Saturday afternoon the opening’match of the season was played on the Thames Cricket Club ground, Shortland, and came off with groat eclat. The Volunteer Band added considerably to the enjoyment of the visitors dining the progress of the game, and the numbers of the fair sex present gave the field quite a lively appearance. The married having won the toss, elected to commence batting, and about 1.40 p.m. the game commenced. Space will not allow of our giving a detail of the play, so we will only say that after a very successful innings, in which the most prominent features were the excellent scores of Messrs. Alpe and Hulme, the married men retired for a score of 118. This looked blue for the “boys”.but owing chiefly to the fine batting of Simpson, whose was certainly the innings of the day, well backed up by Robinson, the captain, they managed to pull off the match with with one wicket and five runs to the good. With regard to the fielding, it will be sufficient to say that one side was a little worse than the other ; but the state of the ground and the want of practice can easily account for that. One exception in this line must be made, and that in favour of the married, Captain Steadman, who throughout fielded exceedingly well. We do not mean to say that all fielded badly, quite the contrary, but taking it as a whole, it was anything hut first-class. The following is the score : MARRIED.
