TEMUKA ROAD BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the above was held on Tuesday. Present—Messrs J. Talbot (chairman), J. Fraser, W. Snell, and P. Coira. ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £l6B 5s 8d wers passed for payment. CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was read and dealt with as follows : From Mr P. Stratford, asking permission to put a gate on road through reserve near his section.—Granted on condition that the gate is erected to the satisfaction of the overseer, and that he sign the usual agreement. From Mr W. Johnston, asking that hiß name be placed on the roll in respect of the property known as the Winchester Hotel.—Agreed to. From the Lands and Survey Office, notifying that the sum of £327 7s had been placed to the credit of the board for accrued "thirds" as per schedule enclosed for quarter ending November Ist, 1894. From the S.C. Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, covering returns of "aid" supplied to residents in the district. From Mr Aymes, notifying his appointment as valuer for the district, and asking for access to the rolls, etc.—Every facility to be given. overseer's report. The ovoraeer's report was read aB follows : •* To the Chairman. " Sir, —I have the honor to report for the past two months as follows :—Since the November meeting tenders were invited for formation and shingle on the road running from the Main Waitohi road, past Coil's, to the Gully Bush road, aud also for cleaning drain on Rolleston's road. Tenders for these works were received on the 4th December, and the members present on that day dealt with them as fa-lows:—The tender of Mr J. Fifield, at 4s per chain for re forming, and lid per yard for shingle, was accepted for the first job, and that of Mr D. Mclnnes3, at Is 3d per chain for the second one. Tenders have been invited for the right to cut and gather cocksfoot ssod growing on roads under the control of the board, and that of Mr Amos Hope at £6 10s was accepted. The contracts for formation near the Rangitata Railway Station, formation near Mr Cadwallader's, and formation between Newlands and the Rangitata are completed and passed for payment. Since last meeting 1 have obtaiued about 3700 feet of heart of black birch to replace the girders in the Rangitira creek bridge, the bridge near Mr Cook's ou Talbot's road, and a bridge near Mr Stewart's at Orari. As authorised by members present at date of last mooting, I have arranged with Mr Lawlor to deepen about 16 chains of the caual drain at Is per cubic yard (solid measurement) for putting out shingle, and 9d per yard extra for ct.rting what is required. Re railway crosaing at Opuha street, Orari; From enquiries I have made I think that a crossing at this place would be a convenience to tettlers ou both sides of the line. An ordinary level crossing is ro quired, and the cost of such is about C Jhe day work done during the mouth

consists of tairing bridges, replacing bridges at Milford, attention to river fords, and ordinary surface work. Small birds : Eggs and heads have been coming in very freely since the holidays commenced, and I have already expended the sum of £6O 13s 9d in purchase of same.— I have, etc., "F. Archer, " Overseer to Board." It was resolved that the board will share cost of crossing at Opuha street, Orari. SMALL BIRDS, ETC. The overseer reported that the purchases of small birds and eggs had bean heavy during the holidays. Members considered that it would be advisable to continue to purchase eggs and heads, and it was resolved to expend say another £IOO upon the same. The meeting then terminated. GERALDINE TOWN BOARD. The monthly meeting of the Geraldine Town Board was held on Tuesday evening. Present Messrs A. White (chairman), G. Ward, H. B. Webster, W. H. Walton, J. M. Sutherland, and W. S. Maslin. CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was received and dealt with as under : From the Colonial Secretary, requesting a statement of the cost of the licensing election and local option poll of 1891 as against the poll held in 1894. —Return to be made. From the Lands and Survey Department, enclosing schedule of the sections for which thirds and fourths have accrued in the district, and asking particulars as to spending same. From Mr R. Y. Ferguson, asking that the name of Thomas Finch be placed on the rate roll in place of his owa in respect of sections 331 and 339.—Granted. From Mr J. J. McCaskey, applying that his name be put on the roll for section 160.—Granted. STRAY CATTLE. A petition was received, signed by a number of ratepayers and residents, respecting the great number of horses and cattle allowed to wander on the streets, making the footpaths in a filthy state. The chairman said the r e was no doubt that cattle about the streets at the present time were a perfect nuisance. After further discussion as to the necessity of the board erecting a pound of its own, Mr W. S. Maslin proposed, and Mr H. B. Webster seconded overseer and works committee prepare plans and specifications for a pound, and that tenders be invited, to be in by next meeting; the pound to consist of two yards; separate tenders for each, work and material."—Carried. It was understood that the pound be erected on the short road leading to the riverbed near Mrs Quiun's. URINALS. Mr Ward thought that the board should erect one or two urinala about the town for the convenience of the public. He proposed next the proposed new pouud."

Mr Webster mention that a urinal would be erected at the saleyards for next sale day. Mr Ward's resolution fell through for want of a seconder. SLAUGHTER-HOUSE FEES. Resolved—" That the scale of charges re slaughter-house fees be the same as that of the Geraldine County Council, and that the fees be collected at once by the overseer." It was resolved that the appointment of inspector be held over. WEEKLY HALF-HOLIDAY. The Chief Inspector of Factories wrote stating that the question of a weekly half-holiday must be settled by a meeting of delegates of boroughs aud town districts under section 9 of the Shop and Shop Assistants Act, 1894. Resolved half-holiday, seeing that it is so recognised at Geraldine." THE MANSE DRAIN. Mr Webster asked, on behalf of the managers of the Presbyterian Church, that the drain near the manse be flushed occasionally.—Drain to be flushed once a week. DOG FEE COLLECTOR. It was resolved that Mr C. E. Sherratt be appointed collector of dog fees. THE PAN SYSTEM. Mr Suthejland asked when the finance committee would report as to charges for emptying nightsoil. The finance committee resolved to meet on Wednesday evening, January 9 th. A DANGEROUS WELL. Mr White drew attention to the dangerous state of a well at the back of Taylor's boarding-house.—Resolved that the parties concerned be written to. ENCROACHMENT. It was resolved that Mr T. Herlihy's attention be drawn to the encroachment of a hedge on the footpath opposite the Volunteer Hall. PAY-SHEET. The pay-sheet amounted to £l6 5s 2d. VOLUNTEER HALL. Mr Maslin gave notice to move in the matter of getting the Geraldine Volunteer Hall vested in the town board. The board then rose.
