ENGLAND V. AUSTRALIA. Melbottbne, Dec. 31. The weather is fine and cool this morning, but overcast. Saturday's takings amounted to £632. The wicket rolled out excellently after the Englishmen's innings, and the score ought to have been much larger. Gregory described the pitch as being really good. Lyons declared that the ball that bowled him was a perfect beauty. Trott appears to have lost all dash in batting, being in 52 minutes for only 16. The following are to-day's scores: — Englishmen—2nd Innings. Careful play was the order of the day, though the wicket was perfectly true. The following are the additional scores: — Englishmen—2nd innings. No separation could be [effected, and when the stumps were drawn for the day the score stood as follows: — Australians—2nd innings. Bruce, not out 43 Trott, not out 43 Total 86 Total of the Ist innings ... 123 Grand total 209 The Australians have yet to make 342 to win. Close on fifteen thousand people paid for admission to-day, £937 being taken at the gates. Geraldine Junior Club journeyed to Ashburton on New Year's Day, and played a match which resulted in an easy victory for Ashburton. The chief scorers for Ashburton were, T. Bagent 46, and Andrews 7; andfor Geraldine, Chesterrnan 17, and Winstone 8. The totals being : Ashburton, first inniDgs, 81; Geraldine, first innings, 45, second innings 29, total 74. Andrews bowled best for Ashburton, and C Moore and A. Willoughby for Geraldine.
