LABOUR, ETC.
Suez, Oct. 16. The strike of dredgemen has been settled. Sydney, Oct. 16. A number of free shearers abducted fiom Forbes district have been released. They decline to prosecute their captors alleging that they took an oath not to do so. The Mimi colliery, in Newcastle, which employs 450 men, has given notice to the men that the mine will be shut down in a fortnight. The closing of the pit at Newcastle is due tp failing trade and also to the Victorian Government largely cutting down orders for coal. The owners state that if the Coal Mine Regulations Bill passes in its present form it will necessitate the closing of most of the pits. It is expected that the Lambton or Burwood colliery will shortly close. Melbourne, Oct, 16. A report has reached here that 69 large sheds and a number of smaller ones have commenced work under the shearers’ agreement.
