PRIMITIVE METHODIST CHURCH, TEMUKA.

Service of Song,

On Thursday evening, at the Primitive Methodist Church, Temuka, a concert and service of song was given in aid of the organ fund. There was a very good attendance. The Rev. Mr Williams presided and introduced the several soloists. The first item was the anthem, " As the Mountains were around about- Jerusalem," by the Geraldine choir, after which Mrs Marsden sang " Ask for the Old Paths." Mr Robson sang "The Holy City," which was followed by the anthem, " I will Praise the Name of the Lord," by the Geraldine choir. The duet " Gliding to Fairyland" was sung by Mrs Maraden and Miss James, after which Miss Andrews sang "He shall Feed His Flock" with excellent expression. The quartette '• God will take Care of You," by Miss Marsden, Miss James, and Messrs James (2) was followed by an anthem by the Geraldine choir, concluding the first part of a very enjoyable programme. Applause was frequent and well deserved. After a brief interval Briar holm's pretty service of song, u True as Steel," was performed. The connective readings were very expressively read by Mr T. B. Strong, and were really as enjoyable as the musical parts, which were also good. The narrative deals with the faithful devotion of a poverty-stricken orphan lad to his younger brother, his struggles to maintain him, the difficulties and encouragements he meets, and their subsequent establishment in the happy home of their grandmother, who has been seeking them. Some portions of the story are very pathetic, but there are occasional humorous touches. The soloists were Misses Andrews, Maslin, and Sherratt (Geraldine), and Miss E. Smith (Temuka), all of whom acquitted themselves well. The choruses were in some instances taken by a quartette with excellent effect. "Praise Waiteth for Thee, O Lord," and " Under the Shadow of Thy Wings," were much admired. In the anthems and choruses, in addition to the ladies already mentioned, Mrs Maslin and Messrs Robson and C. E. Sherratt took parts. Mr T. Sherratt acted as organist, and was accompanied by Mr A. Sherratt (violin) and Mr D. Bryan (euphonium). Mr James, who acted as conductor, accompanied some of the items. The whole entertainment was very enjoyable, that portion contributed by the visitors being unusually pleasing. The service will be performed at Geraldine at a later date, where it is certain to be fully appreciated.
