MEETING OF CREDITORS.

The first meeting of creditors of James Elder, confectioner and wheelwright, Temuka, was held at the Deputy Assignee's office on Monday. Mr Hay acted as counsel for bankrupt, and Messrs A. Budd, B. unexpired lease of shop in Main Street, Temuka, leased in May last at 12s 6d per week. Stock-in-trade was valued at £63, book debts £ls (estimated to produce £l2), furniture £l7, surplus from securities £22; total £114; deficiency £59 17s 6d. Bankrupt said that he had been in business 13 mouths, his wife looking after the confectionery shop and he working at his trade as a wheelwright. His wife became very ill, and he had to leave his trade and look after the shop. He had i incurred a good deal of expense over his wife's illness. The business was one that did not pay a man to look after. One creditor had pressed him, and as everything would have been sold he had been obliged to file. Could make no offer. He I had borrowed £4 part of his filing fee, and taken £2 out of his assets. He had paid Mr Hay nothing except the £6 filing fee. It was resolved on the motion of Mr Budd, seconded by Mr Rice : —-" That Messrs E. Brown and C. Bates be authorised to obtain offers for the interest in section purchased from Mr J. Brown, and in the event of the same not being sold within a month, the Assignee be authorised to give up to the bankrupt his interest (if any) in the section ; and that Mr Elder be recommended for his discharge." The meeting then closed.
