Shanghai, Sept. 27

Reports are received here that attacks by Japanese on Anchow and Yichow were repulsed. Japanese cruisers are scouring the Yellow Sea.

The China Merchant Company are selling their ships to neutral flags. There is a panic in the Chinese mercantile world. *

The treaty between Japan and Corea binds the latter to supply provisions for the Japanese Army and Navy. It expires when peace with China is signed. Sept. 28. Further reports from Yalu state that the Lanyuen sank by the stern with her bows upright in 90 seconds. A shell burst in her cockpit, killing those in it, and wounding a number of the crew. The vessel left action to extinguish the fire which was the result of the shell bursting, and after transferring the wounded she re-engaged the Akyis. The captain himself worked the vessel from the tops, watching the torpedoes until the mast was shot away.

A Chinese court-martial is enquiring into the cowardice alleged against the captains. Admiral Ting charges three of the vessels with leaving without engaging the enemy, and the captains of these vessels make an excuse of the suddenness of the Japanese attack. The Times’ special correspondent states that the concussion from the first discharge of the Cheuyuen’s guns capsized everyone on the bridge, and that the execution of the Japanese quick-firing guns was marvellous. One of the Japanese vessels sank; three others were badly damaged by fire, and a fourth is said to have been so badly injured that her bows were submerged and her propellers were in the air.

The Tonghakoh has attacked the Japanese at Taku, and reinforcements are being despatched from Seoul. Admiral Ting telegraphs to the Emperor of China that the Japanese developed their main attack so suddenly that he was surrounded before he discovered their intention.

The Emperor of China is very indignant at the deception practiced in concealing the true condition of the army, and is proposing to dismiss the Mandarins connected with the war.

The Chinese troops are evacuating Corea, and are being mobilised on the west bank of the Yalu river.

The troops in Wifu aie demoralised and a section broke out in mutiny, and after destroying their arms deserted. The panic in Pekin is increasing, and the situation is regarded as nearly hopeleae.

The Eussian consul reports that a dynastic war is inevitable. The Japanese cruiser Nanewai has reported finding the Chinese cruiser Kevang Yai ashore at Manchuria. The crew fired the vessel and then fled.

It is reported that Id Bung Chang will take command of the field in person. It is rumoured that Japanese troops are being lauded north of Chefoo,

London, Sept. 28. The Times correspondent says that the Chinese at Yalu tried to come to close quarters in order to use their heavy guns with effect, but the Japanese dodged and circled around the Chinese ships. They approached sometimes within 1000 yards, but generally kept away at a distance of from 2000 to 4000 yards. The quickfiring guns throwing a large number of projectiles, were those which inflicted the greatest damage. The rams were not used. The barbettes provad an effective protection, and the steel shots made no impression on them. Tokio, Sept. 28.

An Envoy has arrived from Admiral Tso, bringing details of the fight at Yalu to the Emperor, lie states that the flagship Mat&usium is the only vessel which will compelled to go into dock. The others are repairing damages at sea. St. Pktkksbukq, Sept. 28.

The "Russian press assert that at the beginning of the war, the British Admiral occupied Port Hamilton, but abandaned it owing to the Russian fleet at Vladivostock. Washington, Sept. 27.

Reports have readied here that the army which embarked at Hiroshima is intended for the invasion of China, and will march upon Pekin. The details of the expedition are said to have been planned by American officers.
