The steamer Dorunda ran bows on to the rocks at Berlengas, near Peniche, on the Portuguese coast. The vessel sustained serious injury, and her forehold was soon full of water. The Dornnda’s passengers were landed in a French boat, barefooted and only partially dressed, and took succor in a village inn. It is now feared that the vessel has become a total wreck, as the fore part is submerged to the engine room. The passengers’ baggage, and bullion of the value of £223,000, were landed safely. The New York World publishes a despatch from Rio Janiero stating that there has been five days’ rioting there. Outrages on Portuguese merchants were instigated by Peixoto on the pretence of dispersing a Royalist meeting. AUSTRALIAN CABLE. Sydney, Sept. 26, Two men attempted to rob the Australian Joint Stock Bank at Manduram, near Carcoar, but were interrupted and rode away. H.M.S. Ringaraoma has been docked. About 80 feet of her outer bottom is dented; the rivets are knocked out and between 20 and 25 of the frame/ of the inner skin is started. To an unpractised eye scarcely anything is noticeable. It will take about ten weeks to repair the damage, meanwhile H.M.S. Tauranga replaces her.
