Commandant Ballington Booths of the Salvation Army, arrived at ’Frisco from Europe on July 22. He brought news that his father would visit the United States next autumn. ’ What remained of the “ White City,’ as the great Chicago Fair was called, was destroyed by fire on July 5. The conflagration started in the terminal station, and swept over the entire park. It was the work of an incendiary. The new United States cruiser Minneapolis finished its trial trip on July 14. Commodore Self ridge reported that after making allowance for tides and currents, the average speed was 23.07 knots. The liquidators of the Panama Canal Company have signed an agreement with the new company, by which it will have a capital of 60,000,000 francs to complete the work.
Thomas Oantell and Charles Quinn were arrested in London on July sth, charged with inciting the murder of the Royal Family prior to the recent opening of the Tower Bridge. The prisoners were found displaying the following placards:—“ To the workmen of Tower Hill, Fellow workers, you expended your life, energy, and skill in constructing this bridge. Now come the Royal vermin and rascally politicians with pomp and splendor. They claim all this credit, while you are condemned to the work-house, and to glorify those lazy swine who live by our labor.” Upon searching the prisoners’ lodgings a printing press and a mass of Anarchistic pamphlets were found. The prisoners will be prosecuted by the Treasury officials. Paris is talking of the marked attention, paid by Prince Francis Joseph of Battenberg to Miss Anna Gould, a daughter of the late Jay Gould, the American millionaire. Battenberg has not a franc to his name, and therefore is seeking to sell his rank for coin.
