FATAL FIRE IN SYDNEY.
Sydney, Sept. 2. A disastrous fire broke out last night in Mr J. Lawler’s six-storey furniture warehouse, 608 George street, which was completely destroyed. The brick walls fell hopelessly wrecking the premises of Messrs Patching and Bond, drapers, Messrs Earl and Lemaire, photographers, the cells attached to the Central Police Station, besides one or two smaller buildings. The prisoners who were confined in the cells were removed safely before the walls fell. Fourteen fire brigades were engaged in extinguishing the flames. A fireman named J. Brown was killed by the falling debris . The origin of the outbreak is unknown. Mr Lawler’s stock, which was valued at £20,000, was insured for £15,000; the building, which was valued at £BOOO, was fully insured. Mr Lawler’s is a total loss, as nothing was saved.
The New Zealand Insurance Company had a line of £IOOO on Lawler’s stock.
