James Beard was committed for trial at Auckland on a charge of manslaughter in connection with the death of the boy Erick Hart McCullough from the effects of an injection of tobacco for the purpose of killing worms At Napier, Ernest H. Cooper, alias Arthur Coombes, was committed for trial on two charges of false pretences, valueless cheques beiug passed on two hotel licensees.

A house occupied by Mr T. J. Chapman and family, and situated in Alpha street, Wellington, was destroyed by fire early on Tuesday morning, the occupants onlyescaping by the upstair windows. Very little was saved. The house was insured for £250, and the furniture for £l5O. Alonzo William Dwan, a compositor,aged about 37, son of Thomas Dwan, a well known resident, died suddenly at Wellington early on Wednesday. He had attended the Parliament Buildings the previous night, and on returning home was attacked with a fit of coughing, which resulted in his breaking a blood vessel in the lungs. At Dunedin, James Bussell and James Alsford were committed for trial for robbery, of Kempthorne and Prosser’s plant. William Wilson, a picture framer, was found dead in a shooting gallery in Princes street, Dunedin. The owner of the gallery locked up the gallery in the morning and went to Mosgiol. On lighting up in the evening he found the dead body. Nothing is known as to how the man came to be in the gallery. He was 62 years of age, and married, but living apart from his wife.
