AROWHENUA TOWN BOARD.
The monthly meeting of the above was held last night. Present —Messrs J. Ashwell (chairman), A. Frew, E. Brown, andE. Carr. CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was read and dealt with as follows: From Mr F. R. Flatman, M.H.R., covering sundry copies of Bills to be laid before the House. From the same relative to the petition forwarded from residents in connection with the proposed division of the County, acknowledging receipt of petition, and promising attention to same. From the Crown Lands D6p ar fment, jUnder date August 6th, acknowledging receipt of correspondence re “ thirds,’ ’ approving of proposals, and stating that the Receiver of Land Revenue will pay over to the credit of the board the “ thirds ” accruing, to be expended as indicated, in carrying out of road works in the settlement fronting and leading to the various sections which contribute the funds. From the Linwood Borough Council, sketching a proposal for the settlement of the unemployed question, and asking for the approval of the board to the same. — The scheme suggested was practically the setting apart of blocks of land of an area suitable to the size of families requiring help (from 3 to 30 acres), the land to be of good soil and as near a railway as possible, the erection of houses theon, etc. A NUISANCE. It was resolved that Mr E. Prattley be served with a notice to keep cattle from damaging fences and water tables, and he be informed that failing compliance further steps will be taken. overseer’s report. The overseer submitted a verbal report as to work done, and suggested that any works proposed should be carried out prior to shearing, or as soon as possible on receipt of “ thirds.” The overseer was instructed to put on a man to clean gorse on West Town Belt at expense of the occupier of frontage. He was also instructed to draw Mr Marshall’s attention to the inefficient manner in which the gorse had been removed from the front of his sections, and to have the work properly carried out. Re “ thirds,” it was resolved that in view of fhe proposals for expenditure of “ thirds ” having been approved, and that there are a number of unemployed in the township, the Crown Lands Commissioner be asked to hand over at the earliest date the “thirds” accrued, so that the same may be expended to the general advantage of settlers interested. KATE NOTICE. Notice was given that the board will at a special meeting to be held on Monday, August 27th, make and levy a rate of three farthings in the £ on all rateable property in the Arowhenua Town District, such rate to include board’s contribution to the Timaru Harbor Board. ACCOUNTS. Accounts were passed for payment, and the meeting terminated.
