AN OFFICE BOY’S EXAMINATION PAPER.
To decide the conflicting claims of a number of youthful candidates for the position of office-boy in the office of an English provincial newspaper, the following paper, is said to have been set by way of a test, half in joke, of course : Question Editor, Reporter, Author, Artist, Politician, Statesman, Conservative, Home Rule, Radical, The Living Wage. We subjoin the selection of the answers given (under all reserve) : Editor—An Editor is a man as bosses a newspaper, aud ain’t visible before 12 o’clock except to parties as advertise. Editors is orful lears, all except this one, he die fust. Reporter —Reporters attend meetings and fires. Some is rare toffs, and goes it heavy. When they get down on their huppers they drink orful. Author —A author is a man who translets french plays. Sometimes they writes books like Dikuns and Rover of the Spanish Mane. Artist—Artists sing at Music Halls. Albert chevaler is a artist, sose Paddy Roosky, only he plays the pianer. Paneters is artists when they gets hung. Politicians—A political is the only man as nose how to govern th e country. There’s lots of politicians on the job. Statesman —A statesman is a politician wots got the inside running like Mr Gladstone. Conservative—A Conservative is a toff as wants to keep what hes got. Radical—Radicals want to Roller what they ain’t got. Some of them’s in jale. Home Rule is when the irish wants to govern england and Englishmen wont let them. The Living Wage is for every wun to get enuf money to keep hisself and go to the theater every nite, also not to work no more than he wants ter. Its a splendid iuvenshun, but aint come orf yet.
