A WEALTHY ANARCHIST.
Gauche, the alleged Anarchist who has been arrested in Paris, has, a correspondent there says, a University degree and property that brings him in an income of £4BO a year. He is the son of a stationer formerly of the Rue de Provence. Both his parents are dead, but he has a brother better off than himself, inasmuch as he has, in addition to his inherited means, a situation in a Government office. Gauche is 22, extremely shy, and afflicted with an incurable stutter. Chance excursions in the suburbs of Paris brought him into sociable relations with working-class holiday-makers. He found that they had more sympathy for him, and more patience with his defective speech than persons of his own class. For company’s sake he then frequented eating-houses where mechanics took their meals. Discussions went on amongst them Anarchism and Socialism, Gauche became interested, and the strings of his tongue became loosened in a far greater degree than he had ever expected. He subscribed freely for all kinds of Anarchist enterprises, such as starting papers and publishing leaflets. Nevertheless it was an article contributed by Gauche to an Anarchist print that was urged by M. Dubost in the Chamber of Deputies as a reason why the bill against members of associations of malefactors should be passed. Gauche has been twice under examination since his arrest. He is charged with having been the banker of Anarchist organisations. Letters which were found show that Gauche is affiliated with international Anarchists.
