ASSASSINATION OF PRESIDENT CARNOT.
Pa&ih,, Jane 26. The body of the city at 3 o’clock this, morning, and is lying in the reception room at the Elysee Palace. Thousands of people are going to ..look at the President’s body. The funeral will take place on Sunday at the Pantheon. A period of official mourning will be observed in France for one month. Two Sisters of Charity and two pupils of the Polytechnique Institute guard the coffin, which is swathed in the national flag. A mob attacked the Italian residents in Marseilles and the police were ordered to quell the disturbance. Many French employers are dismissing their Italian workmen. , Incendiary fires have been renewed at Lyons. Three of the mob were burned to death while setting fire to one of the houses. Santo, the ■ assassin, is a journeyman baker. In • reply to the investigating magistrate he asserted that he acted upon his own initiative, believing that the deed would advance the cause of Anarchy. He boasted of his deed, and repeated the murder in dumb shoWv He complained of rough usage by the mob. The police had been warned that the Anarchists -in abandoning the use of dynamite had resolved to use the knife and revolver against the - statesmen of Europe ; Crispi first and Carnot next. The Italian Ambassador notified the police' that Santo had arrived in France and ad vised them to watch him as he was dangerous. The President’s coachman died from the effects of the shock while viewing the coffin. June 27; Six hundred rioters have been arrested at Lyons. The police are closing all the houses and streets in the disturbed quarters of the city. An unfounded report that the French Ambassador at Rome has been murdered caused disorders on the Paris'boulevards. Excitement was only allayed by an exhibition of banners upon the public offices denying the rumour. The police seized an isssue of a newspaper which published a par asserting that the canardhad been confirmed. The King of ■ Siam has sent a message of condolence to the Government. The Empress Eugenie sent a message of condolence to Madame Carnot. Many institutions in Italy have passed resolutions of sympathy with France. The Emperor of Germany has delegated a Minister to attend the funeral. The Anarchists attempted to dynamite the bridge at Mont Lucon. Thirty Anarchists have been arrested ini Paris for justifying the crime. Two thousand rioters have been arrested at Lyons. Thousands of Italians i are leaving France. Santo will be tried on July 23rd. He states that he had long watched for a chance to assassinate the President. It is believed that he belongs to a gang of international assassins. London, June 26. The Prince of Wales in addressing a meeting expressed sympathy with the French nation at the loss of their President. Both Lords and Commons voted addresses of sympathy. June 27, Lord Rosebery, Lord Salisbury, Sir W. Hargourt, and Mr Balfour paid eloquent tributes to M. Carnot and the French The Premier termed the the Anarchists Ishmaelities. Referring to the long peace between England and France, he said he thought that a little coolness and self-restraint in language, with more recollection of what was due to uthers on the part of leaders of states, would improve all foreign relations. He hoped that M* Carnot’s death would abate the strenuousness of international complications. He said that M. Carnot was a pure and blameless patriot, Lord Salisbury believed that the world had reached a period of political -' ths *•*» dow-' t ' hß , Lisbon, May 26. Anarchist placards affixed in this city claim that Ravachol, Vaillant, and Henri have bee avenged, and that Santo merely dispensed retributive justice. Six arrests have been effected, Sydney, June 27. Messages of condolence have been despatched from the various colonies to the French Government. The flags were lowered half-mast on the various Government offices. THE NEW PRESIDENT. Paius, June 27. M. Cassitner Perier has been elected President, receiving *451 votes out of 833 M. Brisson obtained 195 votes, M. Dupuy 97, M. Ferry 59, and M. Argo 27. M. Perier asks M. Dupuy to retain office until M. Carnot’s funeral has taken place ; thou M. Burdeau will form a new Cabinet. The Centre, Moderate Left, and Left cheered M. Perier wildly when bis election was announced. The labor members and Socialists shouted “ Vivo Socialism and Revolution ; abolish the Dictatorship ” M. Perier after his election was moved to tears. In his address in returning thanks ho said that he would give democracy all the devotion of his heart.
