LABOUR, ETC.

London, June 14. Forty collieries in Fife and Clackmannan, Scotland, are dismissing their workmen, owing to the latter attempting to dictate terms when notified that there would be a stoppage. Wellington, June 15. Twenty-seven compositors arrived by the steamer Tasmania from Australia yesterday. Replies to a request from the Trades and Labor Council that letters in connection with the proposed Labor Parliament pass through the post free, the Post-master-General states that the concession could not be granted, as the system of franking letters and telegrams is to be abolished, but the new system is not yet determined.

The construction of the “ Queen’s Drive,” which will provide work for some of the unemployed, begins on Monday. The wages will range from 3s to 5s per day according to capability for work.
