The recently formed Rangitata Sports Association held their inaugural meeting on Thursday last under the most favourable circumstances. The weather was perfect, and the attendance for a country meeting was more than could be expected. The sports were held in Mr G. H. Patrick’s paddock, close to the Rangitata Traffic Bridge, which was the most suitable paddock the Association could secure. By an oversight the time for opening the sports was not advertised, but the public took it for granted that a start would be made about noon, and rolled up accordingly. The first race was got off punctually at noon, and the whole programme throughout the day was admirably managed by the stewards, haudicappers, starters, judges, secretary, and clerk of the course. The only hitch was at the horse hurdle race, when some misunderstanding occurred with regard to the Association’s rules. The fields in each event were excellent, especially in some of the horse races. Refreshments were procurable on the ground, a booth being erected for the purpose, and Mr Howard was present with his apple cart. Mr Finlayson enlivened the meeting with his bagpipes. The secretary, Mr J. LorgeUy, deserves credit for the exact way in which he carried out his duties. The results of the events are as under : 100 Yards Maiden Race—Prizes, 15s and os ; B. Orton 1, J.
